I saw these really neat Siberian shaman costumes, and wanted to paint something wearing one, and then of course, the fly agaric mushroom had to be involved, since the drug soma is supposedly used by Siberian shamans, and derives from it. (And because someone always asks, the antlers are from stag beetles.) Everybody always paints the Plains Indians costumes, because they're neat lookin', but other cultures had neat outfits too!All that said, I still like the idea, but I just wasn't all that pleased with the execution. The paint went where I wanted it to, it did what I asked, but the sketch, even as a simple posed character study, had a great deal more vitality. This is missing whatever essential spark was in the sketch that made me want to paint it. And I can never figure out quite what I'm missing--sometimes it's the one line that changes the whole thing, ya know?
This sort of thing frustrates me, but I figured I'd put it up here anyway, since someone may wish to give the mousie a home. It's mixed media on illo board, 8.75 x 13.5. The original, therefore, is for sale, prints are available, drop a line.

Actually, no one knows what soma was exactly, although it is thought it might have been a hallucenogenic mushroom. Hindu gods and brahmans were said to consume it, and the Hindu god of plants is called Soma, but due to climate change in those ancient times, the plant died out long ago.

For me the bottom of the mushroom doesn't appear grounded in the picture for some reason. I'm not sure why. Maybe there's too much light on it or something.
I love the expression on his face. And the little fluffy brace... er, tail-let? on the end of his tail really completes the costume.

I totally know what you mean, about the transfer of sketch to finished peice, All to often do I dislike the finished art even when I loved the sketch.

It mightn't be as radiant as you'd like. But I think the plainness (if it's at all possible to call this plan) gives the siberian shaman mouse an immense sense of mystery.

if i could give a siggestion id say keep a copy of the finished sketch and if you dont like the finished product, then compare the two to see what got lost in translation. its a beautiful picture though. the amanita looks just like the one in my field guide.
