Description
I don't know. I was going for something, but I don't think I quite got there. Maybe the sheep needs more dark washes over it to push it back even farther into the shadows, but once you start doing that, you can make yourself crazy, going "Just one more wash!" until you've got a solid black painting.I don't know.
One to shove in the studio for a year or two until I figure out what I'm missing, maybe.
18 x 24, mixed media, mostly acrylic. Original is for sale, I guess, and prints are available.

Gorgeous. The sheep is soft, cute, and appropriately frightened by the dreamlike environment. I like the use of texture and lighting. Stone and tarnished metal is rendered marvelously here. It's dark and foreboding without being over the top or crass like so many attempts at nightmarish imagery.

i think the sheep takes up to much of the picture. For him to be afraid everything need to overwhelm his figure and size. small and backed into a corner with larger scissors?

For some reason, I find this one profoundly disturbing. I can't tell if the sheep is huddled in a corner giggling in the broken laughter of the truly insane, or is huddled in a corner in bone-shaking horror. Either way, given the scissors, I figure it's hiding from the sheep-shearer.
Though, in my experience, sheep are far too baffled by life in general to be much bothered by shearing. You sling them about a bit and do the shearing. Then they get up, shake it off, and bound away and five minutes later they've forgotten the whole ordeal and are wondering why they feel a draft. Perhaps it's different in Gearworld.

Shouldn't they be shears, not scissors? You know, rthe old-fashioned hand-shears, with the circular bit that's tythe spring and two triangular blands and you squeeze to cut?

I feel really presumptuous making a suggestion. I just recently found you and every piece that I have been drawn to click on I have loved. I agree with you that this one didn't quite get there. My first thought before reading all the comments was that I didn't like the fleece. I want the fleece to be more luscious, to accentuate what is about to be taken from the poor sheep.
I will now order prints in order to make up for my audacity!

i think the ugly reality (or maybe not so ugly) is that this piece shouldn't be in color. in color, it just loses some of the expressiveness (that sense of surprise/shock/anguish) that you find in the black and white sketch. it's a pen and ink piece, through and through.
that's my "expert" opinion, anyway

hmm...you mention that you liked the sketch better. In the sketch you have a greater variety of line quality, like you drew out the curls in white against the background which gave the sheep a slightly more whimsical and textured look, and its something lacking in the painting.
its still a really effective piece tho...poor sheep afraid to be sheared...*pats its head*
