Description In keeping with my new years baby photos theme, I thought I would post a animal baby that very few people get to see. This is a photo of Luk one of three Clouded Leopard Cubs born at the Nashville Zoo on May 30, 2009. This photo was taken when he was only 8 weeks old during one of the cubs' outdoor play sessions. All three cubs (Luk, Chet, and Sita) were on public display at the zoo from September through mid December, so many lucky zoo patrons got the opportunity to witness these rare cubs. Nashville Zoo is one of only a handful of zoos in the world that are active breeders of this cat for the species survival plan. His parents, our off exhibit breeding pair, were two of the first new clouded leopards imported into the United States in over 20 years, so these cubs represent a valuable new captive bloodline for species preservation. Due to its highly reclusive nature, no one is sure exactly how many of these cats remain in the wild, but they have suffered greatly from habitat loss and poaching for their beautiful fur. I hope you enjoy the photo. These guys were a blast to photograph over the course of the summer and fall, so I will likely post several more shots of them.

Hopefully their enviornment in the wild can be saved. It would be sad if the world would loose them.

Are all three cubs still well?

All three cubs are doing well. They are about 7 months old now. The little girl was sent to the National Zoo in Washington DC a couple of months ago to be paired with one of the male cubs they had there for future breeding opportunities. The two boys are still in Nashville and weigh about 35 pounds now. The maximum weight for male clouds is about 50 pounds, so they are well on their way.
