Description Rendered a while back with the AreaOmni light inside of 3ds Max, I think that the lighting on this particular render helps to bring out the best in the model!

Wow! Thats what its gonna look like when my dad finished our movie theater! Hes making one 4 show on the ceiling, exept it doesn't teleport you at another place/universe/world/time, it just shows a model of space, hes the 1st one to actually build a real working model.

Yah, I think its the 1st working model in history...exept..well..it doesnt do all the stuff it does in the movie, it just shows a model of space when it opens.^^'

wait, this isnt the first one is it? lol, well this is the one i used, very nice, really hard to find a crisp picture of a stargate that isnt somehow blocked by a ramp, person etc, an animated gif of an eruption would be sweet! just a thought... ^.^

Haha, that's a lot harder to create than you think! I've tried several times... and failed.

Indeed. That Iris toook bloody ages to figure out the way of coinstructing and to be completely animatable.

And great sig btw.

The iris! Cool! It looks like it could be a little smoother, they way the slats are rounded inward. And I wouldn't imagine it would have that kind of texture on it. I thought the iris was smooth metal.

Looks VERY good though! I'd NEVER be able to do that, even if I did have 3D modeling program. Awesome job!

True. Thanks though!
This was rendered a while ago (a long while ago) when I only jsut managed to get the iris to actually work and animate, let alone corectly modeled. So even though I submitted it on Apr. 5th, it was rendered way before that when I wsn't as skilled as I am now!

AH! You've ventured into the evil realms of modelling the iris, and survived!!!

Nice job, the lighting looks great! Brings out the detail!

hehe. Indeed I did. Trust me though - you really dont wana see what the first several attempts looked like - they were awful!. I was over-the-moon when I finally managed to figure it! Not only that but model it so it is animatable as well!

Nice model...I'm also a huge fan of Stargate so let me give you some advice for a re-render that may help you. Specifically on the iris...notice how the bump map on the iris pieces are all the same? this creates a very annoying and unrealistic repitition which seriously detracts from the render...I've had this problem with procedurals before myself...if the model isn't to be animated, then change the noise map from ObjectXYZ to WorldXYZ...that way the noise procedural will be calculated based on its position in the scene, not on its position on the object, which will always be the same if th eobjects are each mapped the same way. That will do wonders for this render...

Also I'd recommend lowering the amount of bump...I don't remember the iris being a rough metal, I remember it being nice and smooth, as it shoudl be if the pieces are goign to slide open and shut.

The detail on the rest of the model is exquisite...fix the problems I mentioned and put it in more of a scene, and you've got an instafav

Thank you very much for your help. I personally never understood the difference between Object XYZ and WorldXYZ (I am still learning after all )
I really do agree with you on the repetition of the texture. But at the time I textured it - I tried everything I couldl to stop it - obviously with no avail, so I gave up!
Come to think now you have mentioned it, the bump-map is a little too intense. I will go away now and work on what you suggested. Thanks very much for the help, once again!

I added you to my watch list, I can't wait to see what ya do with it...

I woudl also turn on mental ray NOW and use some global illumination in a render....you can thank me later fo rthat...mental ray is AWESOME!

How so?
I realise it may not be the bext texture job in the world, but the actual modelling of it is pretty much exact.
Do let me know

Thanks though.

Holy crap my bad...i guess it has been awhile seen i have seen the iris...i totally thought that some of the 'spikes' were larger than other ones...i guess not...sorry to confuse you there......and the texture isn't all that bad...it actually looks pretty good
anyways sorry for the mistake...
