Description How wrong does this face look? Can't help to feel there is something horribly wrong with it perspective-wise...

--

It's supposed to be a Dutch poet, painted from ref (an old foto obviously; some 60s thingie ) Unfortunately, it looks only somewhat like him.

What I just don't get it is WHY do I not paint what I see, but instead paint a head at a different angle, different size, and put different facial features on it? I have the damned reference right next to my monitor, yet I STILL paint something else.... I just don't get it... I have like no short term memory. Nothing. Not even 2 seconds. Look at picture, look at screen, picture replaced by something from memory or some on-the-spot face construction I just come up with as a substitute. Doesn't even matter if I look back at the picture every 2 seconds, I still don't actually use the reference >.<

Hehe, that's true. I talked to someone about it and he said he never really painted identical portraits either but he didn't care. He said what mattered to him was the end-result, his painting, work in itself.

I guess that's a good point of view on things. I more care about that I can make the picture work than how identical it is

Although I don't paint or draw any more I have that same attitude with my digital pices.. I have a place in mind I want to recreate but the work turns out the way it wants to..
