From the Crypto Log of Frank Seltzer:

Wasn't planning on doing another like this so soon, but nonetheless here I am working on my crypto log once again. If you're reading this, however you reached it, then you probably already know what this has to do with. Yep, ol' Reed and I made ANOTHER trip through that place time forgot, known forever to me as Skinwalker country.

It started after Ragido defeated the giant Robber Fly in Tennessee. The fight not only resulted in victory for the Super croc, it also resulted in the peerless destruction of Reed's place of business, and his home wasn't in the best shape either. Nonetheless, Reed surprised me when he went inside his slightly buffeted homestead, and came out carrying a couple suitcases full of general supplies. He asked what I was going to do, and I told him I would follow Ragido wherever he went. At that, he smiled and said I'd better have room for one more. Seems Reed has accepted a new calling, well, then again he DID tell me his work sucked...

After Ragido beat the fly, he surprised everyone by turning around and heading out west again. I kinda regretted saying I'd follow him at this point. We rode out after him, taking turns driving so we wouldn't miss him, and buying two loads of gas each stop, one for the car, another for the spare tank I had in the back. Oh, I must have missed mentioning this, but I had called a friend of mine to leave my work vehicle in Nashville, so now we had something a little sturdier, and less "pay by the hour."

Nonetheless, the further westward Ragido went, the more I dreaded where it was starting to look like where he was going. I don't claim to know what that giant guy is thinking, but it seemed that going back to where the skinwalkers were was a top priority thing for him. Reed understood full well the imlications of how much danger we would be in, so he came up with the idea of stopping, raiding a few gas station ashtrays, and making our way. If anything, we'd be viewed as good samaritans cleaning up the town.

But, humor and wit aside, Ragido was headed EXACTLY to were we didn't want to go again. Not only that, but o the day we did arrive, not only was it nightfall, it was the night of a full moon. Now I know that the full moon has nothing to do with Skinwalker transformations, but nonetheless you have to admit it doesn't help the night look more pleasant.

We kept behind Ragdio at a healthy distance, trying to stay downwind and to keep silent. I must say, Reed did a fantastic job this time, now that he was freed from responsibilities and allowed to do as he wished. In fact, in Nashville, after his office building was destroyed in the crossfire of the monster fight, Reed said "That's the second time that big guy has saved my life." Apparently, Reed wasn't all that keen on his job. That was said sarcastically, of course.

Oh right, Skinwalkers. Well, Ragido arrived at an open point, and roared out in defiance. He was freaking calling them in! And they arrived almost immediately. But, while I was expecting a gang up brawl, only one went forward; I had night vision binoculars, so I could see the whole thing.

It was that old woman, and boy did she look mad. Then she changed. It wasn't like the others, not just one animal. No, this one was as mix up of multiple creatures, traits of the worst encounters these lands had to offer all rolled into one skinwalking package. There's a Navajo word to describe what she became, and be warned, it's a mouthful. Yeenaldlooshii. 'Goes on all fours.' Best word to identify it outside of Navajo culture is Werewolf.

She was much bigger than the other three were last time, near Ragido's size. And boy did she use that advantage. In a flash, the two were tearing it up! They seemed evenly matched, but I couldn't help but notice something. She was getting slower over time, almost as though her old age couldn't keep up with her massive lupine ferocity. Ragido, on the other hand, was just getting started.

The fight wore on, claw meeting paw, fang meeting jaw, until I began to notice something, a rarity in the desert; rain.

Clouds gathered over the desert sky, and the skinwalkers all looked up in astonishment. Even the leader, bruised and bloodied but still able to hold her own. With the rain starting, I knew it would just get colder and colder, so Reed and I ran back to the van. As I ran, though, I looked back one more time, and saw the fight end in the form of a lightning bolt, coursing through the wolf's body, frying her insides....and killing her.

I don't know what happened after that. Frankly....I'm not sure I want to know. Maybe the skinwalkers changed in order to avenge their fallen leader, or maybe they all fled for their lives due to the fact that a similiar fate would be awaiting them. But, one thing is for sure.

The rain was still pouring outside, giving a distorted view of the dark world outside the windshield. Reed had fallen asleep in the back, while I was spending the time pulling out some old books on things. Indian legends, mainly. I realize just what happened now as I write this, but-

Ragido! Alright, guess I gotta call this improvised log short. I have a croc to chase!

And there you have it, (for now) the end of the skinwalker arc. It was a tad confusing at times, I'm sure. But, nonetheless, the ending had to happen. Oh, and to explain, the logs are video logs, just to explain. He spots Ragido's form walking away at the end.

Now, the next entries are the ones I've been looking forward to for a while. Keep an eye open!

Now that was a neat little arc. I like how we are following Frank in the style of a journal. It keeps things practical, gets us to know and care about the essential human cast and how it interacts with the monsters, and also presents the monsters as truly some kind of force of nature that we report on and discuss but can never truly fathom.

Thankya.

Yeah, when I first started it, I contemplated doing either a longer story like format of them, or give each skinwalkers individual history. But, I had neither the time to type everything out that that kind of work would require, and I saw little need to throw in some random history for characters that I'm still debating on ever bringing back.

I went with what I have now simply because the humans of importance need to have some time in the writing sun, and the skinwalkers are one of the few threats to people and kaiju alike, so it was decided to go with a journal format. It works well, and gives off the feel needed to get the story, human element, and monster element all out at once. In the end, I'm proud of myself on it.

Glad you liked them.

Great googa-mooga!

Now I know what you get when you cross a wolf with a wolverine!

That thing looks just plain awesome! Again, the only downside I can see is that it's "just another form" yeah I know, I'm a picky bastard. Ignore it.

But kidding aside this is a great looking critter.

Hm, I didn't even think about wolverine traits, but looking at now, I do see it. Mostly, I wanted traits of most major forms of life in the American West. The oddly placed quills, the almost talon like hands, I even originally wanted her to have fins on the tail! But, considering the context of the desert, I saw no need for 'em.

Glad you like her.
