i read someones theory is that dragon growth is simultaneously inversely proportional to age and directly proportional to the size of their treasure. Most dragons wouldn't have a big treasure until they're big and old enough to defend it successfully, meaning their growth is normally fairly constant.

Probably in some universes, since not all dragons in all stories are hoarders, some are just over-grown lizards living in caves.
But it is a neat theory.
