This was another one I posted on the Elfquest forums and never did here. It was also featured on the website as the header to the 30th anniversary tribute page. [link]It features all the Wolfrider chiefs and as many issue #1's as I could fit in there.

I used to love this series, but personally Rouges Challenge and Dream Time ruined it for me. I know I’m probably a minority in this, but both of these stories really killed the fun I was having with this series. In Rouges Challenge, I can't imagine what the hell the writers were thinking! Everyone (even the damn Preservers) is murderously out of character in this issue, and even Rayek states early on in the fight why this doesn't work ad why this is OOC for Cutter. We see him stomping around and throwing rocks in a stone-age temper tantrum. He's an elf not a gorilla!!! He even gloats about how he just fractured Rayek's rib and seems more then content in strangling him in front of everyone. This is the same character that wanted Guttercrawl’s death to be quick and clean, despite all of the things the old bastard did to his kind! Yet now he is 100% opposite of this and is all but sadistic.
I know Cutter was pissed at Rayek and he has every right to be, but they're breaking point should have ended with them having a similar fight like Strongbow and Cutter had after Cutter let the humans who stumbled into Sorrows End leave alive: a mental battle of pure sending. Rayek could have started out by letting Cutter know that Cutter himself was the one who started their grudge match by straight up raiding his home and trying to carry off Leetah. Cutter could have countered by saying it was Rayek's bruised ego that prevented the 3 of them from having a shared relationship, and so on. It should have ended with them beating each other up mentally since the mind is capable of being a more powerful weapon then fists. That would have been more in tune with what Elfquest is, its tone, and how the characters think and react to things. I can't imagine why they chose to have the issue just have them pile-driving each other onto stalagmites. It’s so meat-headed that it makes the Rocky films look like Shakespeare!
Also, Dreamtime was just plain boring, and I swear that some characters just showed up to let the reader know they were alive, like PetalWing’s one panel cameo. Pike’s dream was also the final nail in coffin for me. I mean for Gods-sake, he dreams he turns into a berry, a troll eats him, then shits him out. How stupid/gross is that?!
Both of these were stories were more than enough to make me stop reading the series, which really pisses me off, since I loved the series so much.
Lastly, I am very sorry to just randomly show up with an essay-sized comment like this, I just really need to get this off my chest.

I'm certainly not saying the series is perfect, but I just can't agree with all of your critiques. It's clear that neither of us is going to sway the other on their opinions. I still like the two series you mentioned, and I will continue to. And arguing with a fan in the comments section of her fanart is not exactly the best place for this. Maybe find a forum or something?

If you go onto someone's fanart, tell them a whole lot of things you find wrong with the world they are fanart-ing (even, and especially when the art has nothing to do with the story arcs you are complaining about) and then do the same thing to another of that same person's fanart three months later, it really does sound like you're trying to be rude. Rogue's Challenge was published in 1994. That was TWENTY THREE YEARS ago. I'd say, it's time to get over it, move on, and stop bothering people who still love it.
