The Philosophy of Fashion Design

The series of fashion designs presented in this Look Book is inspired by the many readings I have read throughout my educational career and the thoughts sparked by them. As one progresses through the designs in the order presented, one is taken through my mindset starting from four years ago, and ending with the present. This series illustrates how my thoughts have changed over time and which philosophies have stayed the same thus far. Each piece metaphorically alludes to specific plays, books, and other readings and symbolically reflects my personal opinions and thoughts or significant changes in perspective of each. Elements of each design like the cut and fit of an outfit as well as color and patterns of cloth or embellishments like beading, lace, and accessories (jewelry/shoes etc.) will all reflect my opinions or changes in opinions towards a specific topic (philosophical or otherwise life-related).

Seven: Predispositions – I really don’t believe that there exists a truly free willed person because everything has a genetic predisposition to be or act a certain way. I mirror this idea with the umbrella shaped dress in that the dress is already predisposed to look like an umbrella. But as Pinker says, that genetic predisposition is not the ultimate deciding factor in who we are. It merely influences our actions. For this reason, free will is not completely free, but our will is as free as it possibly could be. In the design, the dress has an umbrella shaped wiring, yet what its final look is determined not only by the shape, but also of the choice of cloth, accessories, and design of the outfit. Thus, by selecting black cloth trimmed in lace and adding pearls and rhinestones, the dress doesn’t look exactly like an umbrella. It only reminds the viewer of an umbrella. The outfit is given a whimsical feel with the pink spotted legging and sleeve, which contradicts the dreary sensation one may feel in presence of a black umbrella.
