Description Wow... I'm totally blown away by all the kind words of people looking at my derpy little pony. I was starting to get really discouraged about making a pony pattern and now I feel way more enthusiastic! (pinkie voice/ I feel a bit like I snorted coffee actually, not that I've ever done that in real life. /pinkie voice) I'm determined that I will finish it so that it's nice enough to sell and get it out there into people's hands.

I've been asked the same things a few times in comments, so I thought maybe I should give some details on the history of the pattern and my plans.

History

For the last month I've spent most of my free time drafting and testing a plush pony pattern. I was initially inspired to try because I love BabyLondonStar's beautiful Fluttershy plush (me and every one else, right? ). I'd never sewn a plush before, but I have many years of experience sewing clothing, mostly costumes for live action roleplaying games.

I leaned quite a bit on generalzoi 's Pony Creator as well as on screenshots from the show to give me a more concrete idea of how the archetypal pony is shaped in 2D. My pattern shares a similar general seam breakdown to BabyLondonStar's, but my pony's legs and hocks have a different shape and I believe my pony is quite a bit bigger based on some of her in-progress pics. My girl weighs in at about 9.5 inches tall (without her ears and hair). This size was scientifically chosen to let me fit my pieces onto standard sheets of paper.

I owe a lot to some of the amazing free plush patterns that are provided online especially the maker of dollmaker.nunodoll.com/cat/ter… , who has many several types of animals freely available. I'd highly recommend checking out the plush community outside of deviantart for inspiration if you want to pattern plush.

Plans

I want to release the basic pattern for a female pony first. I wish I could include the pieces you need to make everypony (wings, horns, many manes and tails, etc), but I'd go crazy with perfectionism and you'd never get a pattern. >_<

The basic pattern will cost somewhere in the area of $10 to 15 including shipping in the US (I'd be willing to ship other places; you'd pay cost of shipping) and will include the body, female head, and several manes/tails.

I can't commit to exactly which / how many manes and tails will be in the basic pattern yet. It will probably be two or three sets that correspond to background pony designs. I want to do patterns for the mane six, but it's going to take me lot of time to develop all of them. I don't want to hold up the whole pattern, so I figure I'll sell them as an additional set when they're finished.

I have a pattern for pegasus wings, and I'll hopefully have an easier to sew version done by the time the rest of the pattern is ready. I'm not sure if I'll have a unicorn horn done by then or not (I hope so). If I have these done by the time the basic pattern goes out, I may include them and raise the price closer to the $15 end, if not I'll finish them later and sell them as an add on set for less than $5.

I'm also working on a male pony head that will fit the same body. He is very fuggly right now, so you'll have to forgive him for not showing his face. In another version or two I hope he'll be presentable and if people are interested I can think about offering him separately as well. The shape I'm working towards should work well for Doctor Whooves or Big Mac. (I'm going to make them anyway! )

Disclaimer

The pattern I've developed is probably best for someone who has at least intermediate sewing experience. She's curvy and has lots of pieces with many small seams. If you're new to sewing, get help from someone with experience and make BabyLondonStar's free pattern ( babylondonstar.deviantart.com/… ) a few times until you're confidant in your ability to sew small curved seams, clip curves, and turn and stuff toys evenly. I'll do my best to make the instructions complete and helpful, but they'll be written for someone who's comfortable with sewing. If you haven't sewn plushies before, that's ok. I hadn't either until recently.

The basic pattern can be sewn almost entirely on a machine. There are a few things, like attaching the head and attaching some kinds of manes and tails, that I've needed to do by hand. You could sew the entire pony by hand if you wanted, I don't think that would cause any problems other than being slower.

I've only tested this pattern with woven fabrics. Since I come from a historical costuming background, I have a lot more experience with natural fibers and woven fabrics (I'm pretty horrible at sewing stretchy things and knits). I've made test ponies out of quilting weight cotton, cotton twill, and flannel. I like the flannel; it's very soft and cozy. I think it compares well with minky and fleece in snuggliness.

I should mention, I'm not going to put requirements on what you can do with ponies that you sew using my pattern: sell them, give them to friends, light them on fire, whatever makes you happy! All I ask is that you mention my pattern was used if you're going to sell them or display them (online or at conventions).

Disclaimer 2

I've been a deviantart member for a while now, but I've only recently started trying to post art and take part in the community more actively. I'm not so awesome at understanding deviantart's formatting system. I apologize in advance if my journal posts and descriptions are ugly and my link usage is elementary. ;_;

Drat, what did I just sign up for?

Uh, I seem to have put myself in for a lot of work. I love the ponies I've made... my husband laughs at how I carry around the early prototypes and snuggle them. But they always seem like they need work to me. I know that in theory you can tweak forever, so I will do my best not to go crazy here.

Right now I have a basic body pattern, a female head pattern, and a handful of manes and tails (some that don't work, due to misjudgments). I also have a rough draft for a male head pattern, which needs love. The body may need another round of tweaking to get the tummy and leg alignment perfect. I'd also like to draft a separate head gore for doing "mohawk" style mane attachment (you need space for the extra seam to sew the mane in).

Each version of the body pattern I make requires a new test pony, which takes me about a week. The head pattern is a bit faster if I have a blank body to try it on. Once I'm happy with the pattern I need to add 1/4" seam allowance to it, scan it into the computer, and make a nice vector version of it for printing. Then I've got to write instructions (and maybe draw illustrations for them if I'm not dead at that point).

I have a full time job to work around and I'll be away on a business trip for a week this month. I'll do my best to give you updates and pictures of my progress. Please be patient with me!

A few people archived copies of Babylondonstar's chibi pony pattern and at least one has reposted it on DA (I don't know if they had permission or not) :

Drop me a link when you finish your first ponies. I'd love to see them.

Wow, I admire what you are doing here! This is alot of work! >A<;

I'm currently working on a birthday present for a friend thats a pony plush, and I was wondering if you could give me a tip or two on how to attach the head on, and how might I put the main and tail on. I've got all my patterns cut out besides and mane and tale, and I'm not quite sure of whether I shuld sew the body together first, and then later make new cuts and attach the mane and tail from there, or do it all at once?

Can you tell me what pattern you're using? Is it your own, mine, or one of the free ones available online?

The general way that I do it is: sew the body, sew the head, turn the body and head right side out and stuff them, sew the head onto the body, sew the mane and tail, stuff the mane and tail (if desired), sew the mane and tail onto the head/body.
You don't have to do it in that order though. Everyone has different strategies depending on what makes sense to them and how their pattern is constructed.

I'm using one I found on dA, [link] pattern&order=9&offset=24#/d3hjxdi I didn't like the head very much, but so far nothing i've tried has come out as good as i'd like it, so for the sake of time I'm not chaning it much at all.

Ok good, that sounds about right That's what I've been doing.

Blah. Speaking of the pony, there is one part in the pattern that is useless and or wrong and makes the poney fat and causes her legs to go outward, so now I gotta unstuff the body and slice her down her stomach to fix it! >T Whhyyyyyy must there be such problems TT3TT

Yea, the two piece underbelly with the seam in the middle is going to give you a kinda chubby pony with legs that tend to splay out. I wasn't very happy with that style either. If you work on another pony and want a different free pattern, I'd recommend either of these two:

Creativegreenbeans In reply to valleyviolet [2012-04-04 01:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that's exactly what happened TT3TT I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized its flaw.
Thank you very much! I fixed it myself b4 seeing this message, but that took a bit of stuffing and unstuffing >3< But now I'll know what to do next time.
Hmmm, I'm still not sure what to do with the head, I'm having trouble with the back of it. I know how to do the front, but I'm not sure what shape I should cut the fabric as so the head would not be.... idk, not round enough in the back of the head? I think this is the part thats given me such major problems >T

I guess the simplest answer to your question is, where ever you want the pony to be larger (rounder/wider/etc), pick one of the seams and add some to either one or both of the pieces along the seam.

I haven't checked to see if you're done yet, but I definitely want to buy this pattern. I have mediocre sewing skills, but my boyfriend has been nagging me to make custom ponies. I just don't have the time, money or materials to commit to making my own pattern when I've never done one before. (He doesn't want the ponies for himself btw, although I have gotten him to love stuffed animals he hasn't converted to a Brony yet, he just loves my custom pony toys and wants me to be able to make a living off of doing arts and crafts lol) I think your reasoning for doing the heavy duty cardstock is wonderful. Also, stuff that is emailed is easier to resell as your own. It is slightly harder to do that with hard copies. (at least for someone lazy like me haha) So excited for this!!

Also I have a few questions that I'm not sure will be answered when I buy the pattern. What sort of stuffing do you use? Do you use wire support to keep them upright, or are they designed so that they stand with just stuffing? Also, you use a sewing machine, correct? I'm looking for good tutorials on how to create the eyes and cutie mark for someone who can't embroider. I'm so full of questions and so excited!!

valleyviolet In reply to Nsomniotic [2012-02-13 15:22:09 +0000 UTC]

I use plastic pellets to weigh the feet (not required, but they stand better with them) and a quality polyester fiberfill. They don't require wires to stand, just stuffing. You may want to wire their wings to make them posable. I wrote out a Tips and Tricks section at the end of the pattern instructions with a bunch of info on stuffing, fabric choices, hand sewing, and other stuff that helps me.

I use a sewing machine and most of the pattern can be done on a sewing machine. There are a few steps that you'll need to do by hand. If you want to sew it all by hand that should work just fine, it'll just be slower. As far as eyes and cutie marks, I made a paper template for the basic shape, traced the eye on with pencil and used paint pens. You could also look at *BabyLondonStar 's tutorial on how to make iron on eyes for plushies (the same technique is usable for cutie marks).

It's ok. Parents can be shortsighted and sometimes people forget that for most of history the best and most famous tailors in the world were all men!

It's only in the last 70 years or so that sewing has come to be seen as only a women's thing. There are some pretty badass men who have done sewing, even in more recent history. If you get a chance, show your parents this

I'm in a slightly different position than a lot of artists in that I'm not going to sell my plushies to support myself. It's not going to cost me anything if other people do (and the world always needs more ponies! ). I know of someone who is selling a pony plush pattern (whee alliteration) and she used to mail it out, but then she decided it would be much easier to email it to people who bought it. She would just have them message her on dA or on Etsy (the site she sold it on) with their email after they paid. That way nobody has to pay priceyyyy shipping or wait for the snail mail c:

I considered doing digital distribution, and I may still change my mind depending on how busy I get / how rough shipping stuff is. Right now I want to make sure that people get really high quality prints of the pattern pieces on cardstock. They'll be maximally durable and tracing cardstock pieces off flat has made a world of difference for my accuracy in executing my own patterns.
