Omg same, its such a pain in the ass. I still haven't been able to make a tail that I am happy with, but manes I think I have a method down.

Tails are harder than manes, that's for sure! I think it's because it all originates from one small place on the horse, whereas with the mane you have more area that it comes from - making it easier to layer and shape it!

Perhaps I should've done one for the tail!

I totally agree! You would think that manes were harder but nope! I have only really done one tail that I like, but its all practice!
Trouble is getting over all the doubts and such, which is what I struggle with a lot. But you make it look so easy!

The pose was a such a bear to make, at one point the head looked so awkward and large and I really struggled making it look right, so thank you for that comment! I was going for expressive so that's good to hear. Thank you!!

(I used to get critiqued a lot on how much I softened the horse in groups so I've been all about that texture life ever since)
