“If I can make it just a little bit further I'll be home free for sure.” With an over excited smile on your face, you weaved through the many colorful, flashy circus tents, doing your best to dodge security as you did. You'd had a couple of very close calls, but you'd managed to evade them every time they came near you. If you could make it a few more yards, you knew you'd be safe, at least until you had to leave. “Here goes.” Taking a deep breath, you darted from your hiding place towards the small tent you knew belonged to Snake. Though the tent wasn't very far away, it felt like it took you an eternity to get there. Once safely inside, you dropped your knees to the ground and sighed. “I made it, finally.” Expecting to find Snake inside, you lifted your head and looked around. He wasn't there. “This is unfortunate, I guess I'll just wait here for him to come back. He'll have to come here eventually.” With a quiet sigh, you pushed yourself back onto your feet and began exploring the tiny space.

You spend the next hour or so looking through his books and walking around in circles. Growing bored, you flopped down on the floor again and tried to read one of his more interesting books. “Maybe he's in the middle of a show or something. I guess I should gave written to him before I came.” As you opened the heavy leather bound book to the first page, you heard a familiar hissing sound. Hoping Snake was finally back, you placed the book on the floor and rushed to the tent opening to look for him, He was nowhere in sight. “That's odd, I could have sworn I heard hissing.”

As you turned around, the hissing continued. Seeing as you hadn't seen Snake anywhere around the tent, you paid little attention to it. Until that is, you leaned down to retrieve the book. The hissing sound intensified as you bent down and you suddenly found yourself face to face with one of his snakes. The snake lunged at you, coming dangerously close to sinking its fangs into your cheek. Too shocked to scream, you stumbled onto your feet and backed away. You should have run, but your the wheels in your mind were moving too slow for you to think. As if the slithering, hissing reptile could sense your fear, it began lunging at you every time you took a step away.

“H-hey come on, there's no reason for you to attack me like that. I've never done anything to make you not like me. I've been nice to you, and your owner, just calm down, okay?” While having a conversation with a snake might seem completely insane and pointless to others, you didn't care. You had to hope that it could understand you and would calm down, at least enough to stop attacking you.

This unfortunately, was not the case. Less than a full step away from the tent's entrance, the snake flicked its long, forked tongue and lunged at you again. This time, its entire body left the ground and it shot at you like an arrow. Your eyes widened as its sharp, venomous fangs grew closer and closer. Everything around you moved in slow motion, yet your body was completely frozen and you were left unable to even speak. Fully expecting to feel the sting of its fangs clenching onto your tender skin at any second, you shut your eyes tightly, as if this would somehow protect you from the inevitable.

Instead of the piercing sensation you were expecting, you felt yourself being pulled back and away from the danger. Shivering with fear, you slowly opened your eyes to find yourself in Snake's arms. The snake, which had tried to attack you, was dangling limply from his arm. “Are you alright?”

“Yes, thanks to you.” You breathed a sigh of relief and pressed your hand against your racing heart. “I guess I really shouldn't waltz into your tent whenever I please huh? I forgot how dangerous your friends can be when they get upset.”

Snake released you from his hold and quickly pulled the reptiles fangs from his forearm. He seemed completely unaffected by the creature's venom, or its incredibly powerful bite. “That was close. You really could have been hurt. Says Emily.”

“I know, I should have thought things through before I came here, and I didn't. I'm sorry about that.” You looked at his arm and winced at the sight. A small amount of blood was slowly trickling from the tiny, but deep wound. “Should we get someone to look at that for you? Snake bites can be really dangerous as I'm sure you already know and I don't want you to end up sick because of my stupidity.”

“It'll be fine. I've been bit before.” Snake turned away from you and wrapped a clean bandage tightly around his arm. While you were used to Snake being quiet and somewhat emotionless, you weren't at all used to him looking angry.

Worried that he didn't even want you there in the first place, you awkwardly shuffled from side to side. “You look kind of angry. Are you upset with me?”

“No.” After tying off the bandage, Snake looked at you and shook his head. “I'm upset with Wordsworth. He shouldn't have acted that way.” As if scolding a child, Snake looked down at the guilty serpent and glared. “He promised he'd be on better behavior next time you came to see us. Says Emily. But he was even worse this time than last. Says Goethe.”

Never before had you seen so much expression on the face of a serpent. He looked angry, guilty and embarrassed all at once. Maybe you were just hanging around Snake too much, but you swore you could understand his emotions just by looking at him. “Oh, I see.” Still feeling a little out of place, you stared down at the floor and began to twist at your fingers. “I'm not sure why he dislikes me so much. Have I actually done something to him to make him dislike me this way, or is he just awnry?”

“He's awnry. I think you're nice. Says Emily.” After he'd relayed Emily's message to you, Snake took Wordsworth into his hands and began to whisper something to him. You didn't know what he was saying, but whatever it was made Wordsworth hiss and flick his tongue. Quite honestly, Neither Snake, nor Wordsworth seemed happy at all. Unsure what was going on, you watched the conversation in silence until finally, he turned back to you.

Blushing for reasons you didn't quite understand, you looked into his bright golden eyes and smiled timidly. “Is everything okay?”

“Yes, everything's fine.” He nodded, seemingly much happier than he had been just a moment or two before. “Wordsworth needs to tell you something important, do you mind?”

The idea was a little odd, but you agreed. “I don't mind, Go ahead, I'm listening.”

For a couple of seconds, the tent grew quiet and very awkward. After Snake gave Wordsworth a slight nudge, he began relaying his words to you. “Sorry I tried to bite you. I don't like you taking up masters time okay? I'll try not to do it again, but if he starts ignoring us to be around you, things might get messy. I'm only being nice because he likes you, so don't feel special. Says Wordsworth.”

You covered your mouth to hold back your giggling and nodded. “Well, thank you very much Wordsworth. I appreciate the fact that you're at least trying to get along with me. I like Snake a lot too. I'll try not to hog him, but it might be difficult for me to remember though.” You looked up from the sheepish looking reptile only to find that Snakes pale, grey face was tinted with a soft pink blush. “Did I say something wrong? O-or are you turning red because of the venom? Maybe we should lie you down.”

“It's not the venom, and you've said nothing wrong.” The powdery blush quickly grew darker and began moving from his cheeks, down to his neck. “I didn't realize you enjoyed being around me. I thought you were simply pitying me.”

“Of course not. I'm pretty sure I've told you before that I like you. If I didn't, I wouldn't have come here and risked being bitten.” You took a step closer to him and contemplated a hug.

Snake leaned back slightly and turned his head away from you to hide his growing embarrassment. “What are you doing? It's not safe for you to be so close to me.”

Now more than close enough for his companions to strike if they wanted to, you laced your hands behind your back and leaned close to him in an innocent, yet teasing fashion. “I was thinking about giving you a hug, but I don't want to end up with Wordsworth's fangs in my neck. You think he'll let me get away with just a quick little squeeze?”

Though Snake didn't answer you directly, Emily made you a promise that you were sure you could trust. “Go ahead and hug him, he needs more hugs from humans you know. If Wordsworth tries anything at all, I'll bite him as hard as I can. Says Emily.”

“Thank you so very much Emily, I believe I will.” Trusting her word, you happily brought Snake into your arms and hugged him so tightly you thought his frail body might snap in half. “Hugs are much more enjoyable when you don't have to worry about dying when you give them. If Emily keeps Wordsworth at bay, I can guarantee you that you'll be getting a lot more of these in the future.”

At first, Snake seemed a little unsure if he even wanted that commitment to be upheld, but after a few seconds of you hugging him, he finally relaxed into your embrace and nodded weakly. “I'm not quite sure yet, but I think I might like that.”
