In a lot of places I've seen artist talk about taking a break to think about your style and such. Maybe it helped in your case.

Yes, I've definitely heard of flash. However I've seen what some people produce and I have to be honest, I don't like how it looks.

I think that's because Flash uses vector graphics. The render really isn't the same as what you'd do in Photoshop for example.

I know a lot of the things produced with flash look almost like they've been done in paint. Is that just the animators I've been finding or what? And I'll go ahead and be the idiot, what exactly is vector?

Usually, when you do stuff with Flash, you simplify it more than when you work with the standard pixelated graphics.
Very basically, vectors graphics are based on mathematical functions that permits you to zoom in and out without changing the render of the piece. (wikipedia article in case you want to know more: [link] )
You basically don't have as much freedom as you do with pixelated graphics... but what you do will look good in more resolutions than the pixelated ones.

When I first heard about those graphics, I was sure you could enter some functions like a Sinus function to get some lines and such... The geek in my was happy.
I was almost sad when I realized that the process looked pretty much like some photoshopping... with less effects and lines that don't want to stay like you want them to.

As for the hand thing... the hand looks a bit awkward and is more sketchy than the rest. Other than that, "the hand is yucky" can have more than one sense.
