Description Here is my yearly list, which shows movies from mediocre to awesome.
(The List with the worst movies I watched this year can be found here:

(My commentary contains spoilers for the listed movies. Seriously, I will spoil the endings of some movies. So be aware!)

Nr. 25: My little Pony: A New Generation
This movie just barely scrapped by and landet on this list. I was debating if it should go onto my worst list. The reason is a very thin plot and my underwhelmed expectations. But the animation ist just so cute and the characters are lovable. And I just want it to be good! I give this movie a pass, because I know there is a follow-up TV-Show in development and I have my fingers crossed that it will be great.
Nr. 24: Voyagers
It's basically Lord of the Flies in Space. But that is not a bad thing. I mean Lord of the Flies was a good book. And the story also works in a futuristic setting. Sure, it's a bit cliche. But I liked it.
Nr. 23: Space Sweepers
Space Sweepers feels like an Anime. A good Anime. The special effects are great and the story is epic. Only some of the slapstick humor feels a little bit out of place. But all in all very enjoyable.
Nr. 22: The White Tiger
Man, this movie packs a real punch. And it feels so realistic. I can totally see such a story happening in real life. And that is kinda scary and depressing. How much power some humans have over other humans. The White Tiger is definitely the movie that gave me the most to think about.
Nr. 21: Moxie
Finally a movie that understand feminism and shows it in the right way. Lately I have seen a worrying trend of other movies, that claim to be all about the empowerment of women. But to show that, these women are strong and perfect, while all the male characters are dumbed down or villainized. On my last years lists we had "Enola Holmes" and "Birds of Prey", who were both guilty of this tactic. (Birds of Prey managed to be on my best list only because Margot Robbie is awesome as Harley Quinn.) But degrading men is not the point of feminism! We want to be equal and not better! And Moxie was the right way to show this. We had strong, female characters, sure. But we also had smart and good male characters like Seth and the mothers boyfriend. In the same vein, we see that not all women are always flawless. The Principal was pretty corrupt. And even the main character showed some signs of toxicity, when the whole Moxie thing went to her head. And the movie called her wrong behaviour out, without ridiculing the Moxie movement. Please more of such good representation, and I would start to be proud again to be a feminist.
Nr. 20: New Gods: Nezha Reborn
The Animation of this movie looks amazing! It is so beautiful! And I love the whole mythology behind the chinese legend of Nezha. Also this movie seems to be connected to the White Snake movie. And there is a Sequel planned for that one. I hope that in the end we will have something like the MCU connected Universe. That would be awesome!
Nr. 19: The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
Unadulterated Fun! That's what this movie is. The jokes just come flying in and will leave you wheezing for air. At least that's what happened to me. It is ridiculous how entertaining the whole movie is. And I love all the characters. Normally Ryan Reynolds plays the most funny ones. But here he is nearly the straight man, to the absolutely crazy Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek. Further we get Morgan Freeman in one of his best and most surprising roles.
Nr. 18: Black Widow
We finally got the long awaited Black Widow movie. In comparison to other MCU Movies, the plot feels a little bit like a filler. But a filler movie of such high quality that it still got onto a best movies list. Which is impressive. The special effects, the fight scenes, the humor. Everything is top notch. The little bit unsatisfying ending is the only thing that bumped this movie a little bit down on the list.
Nr. 17: Godzilla vs. Kong
Is this movie dumb? Sure! Don't seek to much logic in it. But nothing speaks against a dumb movie, if it is still immensely entertaining to watch. Sometimes it's enough seeing a giant ape and a mutated lizard duking it out. And the surprise monster at the end was just such a treat.
Nr. 16: Dune
Big! Epic! Amazing Visuals! All these words describe Dune perfectly. I'm happy to have seen it on the big screen. Because I'm pretty sure the bombastic visuals, won't look as breathtaking on a small monitor. Of all the movies on this list, Dune is the most beautiful. But why is it then not at first place, like on so many other movie toplists? Because in my humble opinion the story is just a little bit lackluster and the ending feels very anticlimatic. Eather the movie should have ended sooner; when Paul and his mother fled into the desert. Or it should have gone on a little bit longer. The point that was chosen to end this first part, had no climax and didn't feel like a proper ending.
Nr. 15: Free Guy
Another Ryan Reynolds Movie on this list. That man is just comedy gold. As a gamer myself, I really appreciated all the easter eggs and gags in the background. But the movie is not only very funny, but it has also lots of heart in it. And being a Disney property gives the movie the needed money and freedom to practically do whatever it wants. (I just say Captain America shield and Lightsaber.)
Nr. 14: Zack Snyders Justice League
How do you transform a bad movie into a real good one? Ask Zack Snyder. (Just don't give him another Zombie movie, as I elaborated on my worst movie list.) I was debating, if I should put this movie on my list, because it is not entirely new, but rather a heavely extended recut of the 2017 Justice League. But the extended parts are on their own as long as a movie. And this version feels like a completely different movie. They actually managed to transform Steppenwolf, who was a boring and bland villain in the 2017 version, into an intriguing, better looking and even relatable character. And the ending was so much better. Even the Jared Leto Joker was far more interesting. I kinda wish we would have followed this Snyder-Verse of the DCEU instead of what we have now.
Nr. 13: Luca
Heartwarming and colorful, with a really good message at it's core. This is a description of nearly every Pixar movie. And Luca is no exception. Feeling like a different version of the little Mermaid, this movie is a joy for big and small.
Nr. 12: Raya and the last Dragon
Raya is often compared to the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. And for sure, there is a certain look that is very similar. But that is in no way bad. Avatar was great and so is Raya and the last Dragon. Akwafina plays the Dragon Sisu and makes her an extremely likable character. The world seems so full of Lore and thats very intriguing. I think the only little nitpick I have, is that the ending was played very safe. We get a perfect happy ending. Maybe a bit to perfect. I wouldn't mind the tiniest bit of something bittersweet. But of course were talking about a Disney movie.
Nr. 11: The Mitchells vs. The Machines
This is top notch animation with the best possible humor. Every joke lands! And every family member of the Mitchells is so very relateable. I hope very much that we will get a sequel. Because if a movie needs to be a franchise, it's definetly this one.
Nr. 10: Encanto
Lin-Manuel Miranda did it again. He wrote a bunch of songs, that are now stuck in my mind and I can't stop humming them. Encanto is beautiful and heartwarming. But that's nothing new for a Disney movie. (Or a Pixar Movie like Luca, as mentioned before.) What elevates this Animation are the catchy songs. Every song in this movie is great. Not one of them is bad or even mediocre. And they carry all so much emotion. I laughed and I cried. This movie is one of Disneys best.
Nr. 9: Wish Dragon
Some of you will wonder how Wish Dragon trumped all the other Animation movies this year. It has good Visuals, but they are not as detailed as the ones from Raya. The humor is funny, but can't reach the heights of the Mitchells. There are not catchy songs like in Encanto. And the story is basically just a modern retelling of Aladdin. But there are two strong points, that make me love this movie. 1. Yes, it's Aladdin. But imagine if the Genie was actually a jerk and needed to learn what friendship is. The Wish Dragon is more like an antihero, who get's redeemed in the course of this movie. And I'm a sucker for redemption stories. 2. We get the bittersweet ending I would have wished Raya had. This movie has the guts to not give everyone a happy ending. The Wish Dragon is not freed and doesn't go to heaven, but instead he sacrificed his chance and now has to serve another thousand masters. We still see a glimmer of hope. Someday he will be free. But it's not now. It takes guts for a kids movie to give us such an ending. And I appreciate it.
Nr. 8: Venom: Let there be Carnage
Best romance movie. No, I'm serious! The relationship between Eddie and Venom is great and has definitely some romantic undertones. And the makers of this movie know that. It's no coincidence that those two bicker like a married couple. Their symbiosis is practically like a marriage. And I love it. But Carnage and Cletus Kasady are also very good characters. This movie lives from the character interactions. The only problem I have, is the short runtime. The movie was over far to quickly.
Nr. 7: Ghostbusters: Afterlife
This is what a good Ghostbusters movie should look like. And not like the awful 2016 Reboot. That one was embarrassing and put the Ghostbusters name to shame. Afterlife is a much needed return to form. It connects to the original Movies, but still feels fresh and exiting. When I watched the first trailers, i was sceptical, because the main characters were children. I feared that the new version would turn out to be a dumbed down kids movie. Luckily I was wrong. Not only are all of the new characters great. But the returning ones are equally awesome. And we see Gozer again. That was my personal highlight.
Nr. 6: I Care a Lot
I heard that most people didn't like this movie. The main reason are all the unlikable characters. And they are right. Not one character in this movie is good. Everyone is an Asshole. Normally it would be a problem, when you can't relate to anyone. But not here! At least not for me! I loved that this movie was full of jerks. Because I didn't need to feel sorry for anyone, when something bad happened to them. And this gave me the freedom to not worry about the wellbeing of a character, but rather giddily anticipated what atrocious things they would do next to their rival. And that was loads of fun.
Nr. 5: Jungle Cruise
Imagine the plot of the first "Pirates of the Carribean" and the characters of "The Mummy" (the one with Brendan Fraser) and you get Jungle Cruise. Like the Pirates Movies Jungle Cruise is based on a Disney Ride. And also like those movies, we got some immortal guys. We got a curse. We got a treasure. (Albeit, this one is not made out of gold.) But the characters feel like carbon copies of the Mummy characters. But if Jungle Cruise has nothing original to it and just copies other movies ideas, why is it near the top of this list? Because I had so much fun with it. Yes, it's pretty unoriginal. But that didn't bother me. I felt rather very nostalgic, as if I would watch the Mummy or Pirates of the Carribean again for the first time. I know thats maybe a weak point. But I remember leaving the cinema with a big grin on my face. So I can't deny that I loved every minute of it. Call it a guilty pleasure, if you like.
Nr. 4: Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings
The Fight Scenes! You need to watch the Fight Scenes! I swear I have never seen a better coreography, than in this movie. Especially the first big Fight Scene in the Bus. The punches were thrown in accordance to the background music. It was like watching a music video. An extremely cool music video. Additionally we finally got a worthy Mandarin and not just a cheap knockoff. (But Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slatery was still good in this movie. And hilariously funny.) Also Akwafina was awesome. I only ever heard of her since this year and she is starting to become one of my favorite actors.
Nr. 3: Cruella
Everyone in my family and in my circle of friends and even colleagues at work loved this movie. Just on the Internet I'm hearing so much negativity. The main gripe of many people seems to be, that the Cruella of this movie is so different from the animated version. But that is a big plus in my opinion. I always was very underwhelmed by the Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians. If you ask me, she couldn't hold a candle to great Disney Villains like Maleficent, Frollo, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, Hades or any other of the countless far more evil villains. While other villains wanted to rule the world (or at least a kingdom), Cruella was only preoccupied with her fashion. Sure, she wanted to kill puppies for that, which does make her a bitch. But killing dogs (how atrocious it may seem) is in my opinion far less evil, than enslaving a whole country. So my point is, that Cruella was never an interesting villain to me. But this movie managed to make me love Cruella. Because she doesn't works for me as a villain, but she works as an anti-hero. And that's exactly what she is in this movie.
Nr. 2: The Suicide Squad
This is what the first Suicide Squad should have been all along. Just pure fun with no restrictions. I'm am so happy that we got an R rating. Without it the humor wouldn't have worked half as good. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is like always the shining star. But the other characters don't need to hide eather. Each one is unique and funny. I just can't mention often enough how immensely funny this movie is. It's also absolutely crazy and unhinged. And the story takes some risks, that could easily have backfired. Some of the Suicide Squad Members were heavily advertised before the release date of this movie, only to die in the first ten minutes. That decision takes balls. And whats even more surprising, besides all the crazyness and laughter, we got some genuinely heartwarming moments.
Nr. 1: Spider-Man: No Way Home
I'm still debating if I like this movie more than the first Avengers movie. And that is the highest praise I can give, because the first Avengers movie, was always my top 1 MCU Movie of all times. Ever since the Multiverse was announced for the MCU, I waited full anticipation. And I wasn't disappointed with what I finally got. This feels like a love letter to every Spiderman Fan. Not only do we see the return of the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Elektro and the Lizard. But we also get all three Spidermans! They managed to get Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield for this movie. I'm in awe. Additionally the plot revolves around redeeming all those Spiderman villains. As I mentioned before, I love nothing more than a good redemption story. In every other Spiderman Movie the villain always died at the end. (With the exception of Vulture, who got sent to prison.) But this time Spiderman will save them all. I'm so in love with this concept, that I get teary eyed just thinking of it.
