A tidally locked Earth wouldn't experience permanent day/nights, instead each one would last half a year given the Earth still rotates around the sun. In order to be tidally locked Earth's rotation would need to be equal in time to a year.

Tidal lock take place when an astronomical body, as a planet, shows the same side everytime to another (i.e.: The Moon to the Earth). If the astronomical body shows the same face to the star, one side may be very hot for live, and the other very cold for it ... live only may occur in the border of both side.
