“I’m going to keep bothering you until you tell me,” she told him, jumping up on the rock next to him. To her surprise, he scooted over a bit to make room for her.
“Why should you care?” His voice suddenly turned bitter. “It’s not like anyone else does.”
She glanced at him. “You’ve got a whole fanclub that’d pretty much do anything for you.”
He curled his paw into a fist. “But that’s just the thing! They only stick around me because of how I look. They don’t actually try to know me - they don’t know there’s more to me than hairspray and mirrors.” He angrily swiped a claw down the center of his reflection in the pool. “But you probably don’t care about that either. To you, I’m probably just Heath - overconfident, arrogant, conceited Heath.”
The resentment in his voice took her off-guard. “I always figured you were too… busy to talk.” She had wanted to talk to him before, but she’d never really been able to catch his attention… until now. “And you know - maybe people would care about you, if you’d let them…”
“Like my parents did?” Heath snapped, then instantly regretted it. His eyes widened, but there was no taking it back.
“What happened?” Gloria asked hesitantly.
