T-80 X-Wing Snubfighter. Replacing the damn T-85 X-Wing in my headcanon. Fuck those split wings. And those waterguns.

Characteristics

The T-80 X-Wing was the next-generation model of the X-Wing Starfighter developed by Incom Corporation , and utilized by the New Republic Defense Fleet by 20 ABY, sixteen years after the Battle of Endor . Slowly replacing the T-65, and it's variants over the next nine years.

Incom's T-80 X-Wing starfighter was an advanced version of the old T-65B X-Wing starfighter . Featuring four 4j.4 fusial thrust engines , and equipped with an advanced hyperdrive. Reaching speeds up to 1,500 KPH , and 140 MGLT . The craft is flown a single pilot, and aided by an R7-series astromech droid . Additional systems include but are not limited to deflector shields, sensors, backup shield generators, enhanced targeting systems, maneuverability, avionics, and laser cannons, which were notable for firing uniquely blue lasers. The T-80's distinctive nose held advanced sensors.

Armed with four Taim & Bak KX12 laser cannons on the S-Foils which deployed, as all X-Wings do, in the characteristic "X"-Shape. Additional armaments included KrupX Munitions MG8-A proton torpedo launchers. With upgraded engines over the T-65B, with greatly enhanced fusial thrust. Improved flight systems contributed to enhanced maneuverability. The cockpit is placed near the rear center, with a snub nose design. Targeting systems included Fabritech ANq 5.0 tracking computer with IN-500-C "Sightline" holographic imaging system.

Compared to earlier series of X-Wing starfighters, it is a substantial improvement.

History

The T-80's were flown under the banner of the New Republic Defense Fleet by the decade after the Battle of Endor. The impetus of their design came from the realization by Fleet Admiral Gial Ackbar that the aging T-65s would soon be outclassed by the newer fighters of the Imperial Remnants under Gilad Pellaeon. Incom was contracted to design an entirely new X-Wing platform to replace the T-65. Design requirements were that the new platform be as customizable and easy to maintain as the older platforms, while still being an improved design platform. Incom would produce numerous prototypes, but all fell short, until the T-80's current design was conceptualized by the original designers of the first T-65 prototypes. It was instantly a hit with manufacturing contractors, and New Republic pilots alike.

Originally, it was exclusively issued to elite squadrons stationed aboard New Republic Star Defenders, and the New Jedi Order. The T-80 became instantly notable throughout the military, due to the uniquity of it's primary weapons' blue lasers, rather than the conventional red. This was due to the new tibanna ionization chamber in the KX12 armaments, which produced the foreign color. Other improvements included the ability to bring their shields down and then back up, in rapid simultaneous succession between the generators, allowing one to dissipate heavy enemy laser fire without overloading any one shield generator, essentially providing an immunity to Stutter-fire, which would debut on the T-80. Stutter-fire is the act of firing dozens of low power laser bolts in rapid succession to over stress the target's shields, and then fire full power blasts, to disable or destroy the target. A tactic which became quite effective against pirates, as the T-80 began to see wider spread use in the decades after Endor.

T-80 X-Wings would form the backbone of New Republic fighter corps by 25 ABY, and would serve with excellence through the Yuuzhan Vong war which began that year, and continued through 29 ABY. And would go on to continue it's diligent service in the Galactic Alliance's Defense Forces, until 65 ABY, where it would be replaced by the T-100 X-Wing, jointly developed by Incom, and FreiTek Incorporated , which was famous for it's E-Wing line .
