Description Seeing how my last drawing was a bit... uninspired, I decided to try and do something a little more appealing.
I also realized that I haven't drawn my lynx character in a while, so I chose to include her as well :3 I've done some minor changes to her design, but I'm still not 100% happy with her right now. I might need to sit down for a bit and tinker with her colors and patterns to see if there's something I like better.

While drawing this I was struggling with getting the lighting of the characters to somewhat match with the background. I think it's alright as of right now, as I chose a rather soft lighting under the roof, but they still feel a bit off in my opinion. The drinks were actually kinda fun to draw, as I've done nothing of that sorts so far. Including all the small and tightly curved reflections was an interesting process, and I learned a lot during it.

Also, he's not hitting on her, they're just having a nice conversation :^)

I'm interested to know what you guys think!

Heya, sorry for the delay in commenting, I've been really lazy recently and this went up while I was at the tournament with just my phone.

I think this came out very well and represents a significant step up for you in a couple of areas. The glasses of the drinks look fantastic, but actually, I'm almost more impressed with the shiny counter. I feel as though you can follow a standard procedure for a glass, but the counter shows a genuine understanding of the lighting and how to apply it and it's really effective. I like the fur on both the characters, especially the longer fur on the cheeks too and the expressions are subtle but accurately portrayed.

With regard to the colour I think it looks pretty good, although I have a few suggestions. The relatively soft shading on the characters compared to the cloudless day outside suggests that they are not in direct sunlight, presumably because the roof offers some protection. This means that the light conditions on the foreground are slightly different to the background. I think you might expect a little more dark, saturated colour, especially on Leyla and her bright blue bikini. Conversely, brilliant sunlight on white sand is really bright and reflective and tends to wash out colour and detail with its strong glare. Because of this, I think you could make the background sand a bit whiter and less contrasty, especially around the edge of the water. The combination of these two factors would make the relatively darker and more saturated and contrasty characters stand out a little more against the bright background. I made a crude attempt to show this in photoshop just by making selections and dragging some sliders: i.imgur.com/Xi8rHlD.jpg

But yeah, just a suggestion, overall the piece is great and it looks like you learned a lot doing it. Well done!

Okay, finally answering myself, too.

Thank you so much for your feedback! I'm glad the wooden table came out nicely, and all in all I think you're right with what you said about the overall lighting. It's (in my opinion) the weakest thing about this drawing.

Your quick edit isn't perfect either, but considering what limited resources you had available, it's still better than what I did here.

So yeah, thank you again, I really appreciate it!

Wow this looks great, like how you put together this canvas.  Love these two feline characters and how you have them here, a cute couple they are.

Nice work with the lineless work, you have done quite well in putting your skill and effort in making this piece.  Fantastic job with the colors on both the snep and lynx, the fur and spots are quite vibrant and impressive. You have done quite some fine details here especially with the bubbles in their drinks.  I do also like the wave work in the water as well.

Overall, smashing job

Keep it up.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it!

The "bubbles" are actually supposed to be small drops of water running down the outside of the glass (from being cold), but if you like them as bubbles I'm fine with that too

Yee boi that looks awesome! I like how lively the conversation looks with those gestures.

Well those glasses and drinks rally came out super great with the moisture and reflections aswell as the shifted staw. Note taken.

I actually like the way the shadows on the table work, gives the thing a nice organic feeling of polished wood, especially right underneath Varis' arm.

Two things that kinda bug me about Varis tho are his eyes and his nose which seem a little off.

His pupils dont point to the same direction. His nose seems to be tilted a little too much to his right.

Other than that, its a cool looking pic. Nice tilt in Varis' shoulder-pose aswell, stuff like that really make a pose look interesting!

Oh wow yep, his pupils are very much different. Didn't even notice. Also yes, you're right about the nose as well. Thanks for pointing that out

Having a tilted head in your drawing makes it more interesting very easily, you should try it out for yourself sometime!

Thank you again!

Wow! mate, this artwork is in many ways impressive! I can almost not recognize it from the sketch you showed to me. I can't believe you're doing drinks the first time (I assume this includes the glasses too) because your rendering and sticking to the very complex behaviour of glass is stunning! And it doesn't end there... the table they lean against has so wonderful colours to it. And the way the left drink and the arm of your character fade into the shadow...

Did you use a reference picture to capture those colours or do they all originate from your imagination? If so, you gotta tell me your secret and spare me long hours of desperate colour mixing xD

Keep it up, pal!

VarisArt In reply to Souvillaine [2019-06-07 18:33:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh dang, thank you so much for all those compliments!
I used a lot of references for both the glasses (+liquids) and the table. The way I did the colors on the table was to eyedrop the color I want to have reflected, brush over the table that was once brown ever so slightly. That way you get the approximate color when those two colors mix. From there I just eyedrop the new color and use it to paint the rest of the reflections, with some adjustments here and there, depending on how strong you want it to be. So to sum it up: brown table base -> pick up the sky color -> brush over the table softly -> use the new color to paint the rest.
To be fair though, doing this on a somewhat reflective surface is easier than you might think :3

Thank you again!

Oh whoa. This is a really nice beach setting and I'm glad he's not hitting on her. I can imagine that would end with that martini on his head, haha.

But, seriously, I really do like the detail you put into the beach setting. The beach towels, beach ball, umbrellas and the ocean itself are well made, especially with the use of smaller, thinner lines for the waves. And, I have to give special mention to the glasses and eyes. I think those are the highlight of the whole piece, haha.

There is some things I would want to mention that could be fixed/improved for the next one. I feel like Varis' chest is off, mainly the bottom part, as it seems like it's going in a different direction to how the top is going. I don't know if he is standing up straight or not, but I think bringing his left pectoral would help it looks more natural. Also, the top part of the bar they are in I feel like it's too bright for where that is. We can't see the sun, but assuming the sun is high up in the sky, like around 1 to 2 pm from looking at Varis's shadow, I think that top part could be covered in shadow, rather than light. But, if we're going off of the shadows for the umbrellas, then the shadows for Varis and the Lynx would move, as well. Maybe I'm nitpicking too much, but that one area kinda makes me think about the lighting a lot more.
TL;DR - Bring up Varis's left pectoral, darken the top of the "bar."

Again, great job with this piece. Makes me really want to go to the beach again with summer coming around. Can't wait for the next one.

Thank you so much for the feedback!

Yeah those glasses took quite a while to figure out, but I'm glad they came out nicely in the end.

The pose I had in mind for Varis was sort of leaning on the counter, with his body slanting ever so slightly. I can see what you mean with his left pectoral muscle though, that would probably have been a good idea to do.
As for the top bar, I don't really know what happened there, I think I might have just forgotten to shade it haha. I didn't really chose a strong and hard light direction for the cats themselves, as they're both in the shade, with only soft bouncy light hitting them from many directions. As for the background, yes, I imagined the sun to be somewhere around 1 to 2 pm.

Thank you again though, I'm glad you like it! ^w^

I think you really nailed the look and feel of the setting, as well as the textures! The refractions on th glasses look really good and the poses feel really natural. One thing that rubs me a bit wrong is how dark she looks, in comparison to other images of her. I think despite being in the shade it would still be bright enough for her fur to be almost as lightly coloured as in the other pics.

Otherwise I have little else to complain about! It's a really good drawing, and you can be proud of it :3

One thing I did was darken both of them as a whole halfway through drawing them, I might have overdone it slightly with her :^3
