.... wait, there's a theory about unicorns having magic burnouts in which they use more magic than they can usually handle and can become dangerously exhausted. Recovery can leave them bedridden and unable to use magic for several hours or days.

I would tweak your idea saying he is using all of his magic to keep the World Eater from ending the world. In other words, the World Eater's timer is been paused by his magic, and it's taking all his magic to keep the world from ending.
But that's just my idea.
