it's much too large for a bite trigger like most assault rifles and heavy weapons it's designed to be mounted on a battle saddle which has it's own bite trigger.

Thought so, here's the issue, in Fallout: New Vegas the Q-Matter Modulator (which is what the Q-Modulator is a pony version of) is brown and has diodes poking out the sides where as the standard Plasma Rifles are more streamlined and creamy coloured. This image would be more towards the Prototype Plasma Rifle.
