Description In which Burns has absolutely no idea how to handle children.

Since I was a kid, I've enjoyed watching The Simpsons for its originality and humor, but lately, I've been paying more attention to the characters themselves. One I've grown particularly fond of is Waylon Smithers. His ambiguous morality and motivations make him a surprisingly complex character, and the addition of his father's tragic story in "The Blunder Years" just made his already very peculiar relationship with his boss even more complicated, since the latter is implied to have been an important figure throughout young Waylon Jr.'s childhood.

Now personally, I must admit that I'm not really into the whole shipping thing for several reasons, but I still love to see these two interact. Although the very unbalanced dynamics between them constantly lead to Smithers being treated without any dignity and completely taken for granted, a part of me likes to think that Burns may have purposefully tried to shut everyone out after the loss of the one he called his "dear friend", but really cares a little more than he'll ever admit to.

This is just a little sketch (and by "little", I mean literally less than 2 inches high ), so I hope the lines are not too hard to see. I apologize for any anatomical errors I may very possibly have made.
It isn't much, but I guess that will count as my humble contribution to this huge fandom.

One last detail : some of you may have noticed that both in the TV show and the comics, Smithers was often shown with curly (and sometimes darker) hair as a teenager. However, I remembered seeing him with his current haircut as a younger kid in "Springfield Up", so I decided to simply go with that look. The only thing I intentionally left out is the orthodontic headgear he appeared with in that episode, which I felt would hide too much of his face and might confuse those who didn't know he used to have it.

I juat love this piece:') Smithers is so cute and Burns has a chance to be a father even though its not his biological son, it still is a warm feeling.

I love this little cute masterpiece! awww
Especially Burns' ambivalent expression. You can't just say he doesn't like to be hugged. Sure its unnatural and unfamiliar to him, but he doesn't seem to outright hate it And Waylon is just so cute oh my god XD

Given that in Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish, he specifically asked Smithers to hold him when he was nervous about the arrival of the inspectors, it's safe to say that Smithers is his exception to the rule. And it's not just a case of Depending on the Writer, since it was the very same episode that the campaign guy told the Simpsons that Mr. Burns hates to be touched. He does like Smithers' touch...sometimes.

Ohhh yes. Monty is a horrid parental role for anyone and very much like myself would rather not deal with children due to more important matters in his life. Something about that kid bugged him in a sense, probably as a debt to a departed companion, a visual leftover whom haunts him to this day.Β  Personally looking at Burns' character from after the Blunder Years he appears even more hardened and irate than before - not saying that he lacked projected of his nasty disposition with others before that time, because let's be honest, he has always been that spoiled rich asshole, however Montgomery seemed a little more open and perhaps happier and restrained due to Smithers Sr. rooting those devious desires.

I think that sacrifice may have been the event that hammered the final nail into Burns' coffin emotionally speaking - with regards to how deep that friendship between both men went or even beyond the realms of just a platonic friendship is something one has to ponder over, and yet that even adds another layer to the complexity of the entire scenario between Burns and Smithers Sr. (and perhaps towards Burns' feelings of Waylon Jr.'s advances? We may never know.)

Β It's the whole reason why this relationship has intrigued me so.

Burns is (or at least was) one of the most deliciously despicable characters in animation, if there was something heinous, he would take it up to eleven.

Absolutely ! Especially in the older seasons, he really seemed to enjoy being unnecessarily cruel whenever he could be. Boy, what a character...
Now, he still has his mean moments and tends to be harsh most of the time, but it looks like the writers are trying to make him a little more nuanced (if that's even possible for someone like him ) and he often comes off more as grumpy than truly evil.

I like Monty being ridiculously feeble and out of touch with modern society, but i still want him to be legitimately powerful and evil.Β

Agreed, Burns' total ineptitude when it comes to using any kind of relatively recent technology never fails to be amusing.

But yeah, I must say I'm a bit conflicted as for his progressive personality change. On one hand, I usually prefer characters that have complex motivations and an actual conscience to wrestle with, which leaves a possibility for change that could be pretty interesting, but in Burns' case, I'm not sure how much "depth" he can be given without it dramatically diminishing the very traits that made him so memorable in the first place and thus ruining his character.
He wasn't initially supposed to be particularly deep or anything more than just despicable, and a lot of crazy things he did in the first few years of the show just for the heck of it make it pretty hard to sympathize with him anyway, no matter how pitiful he may now appear on a more regular basis, so... I don't really know how I feel about him anymore.
I wish I could just decide whether I actually kind of like him or completely despise him (and like him for that very reason).
