Description Surprisingly enough, this picture took maybe 2 hours to finish and involved some finger-painting. For that it turned out really well!

Edit: The original picture quality was bad, I didn´t realize that. Now it´s way better.

Finger painting sounds like a blast. Love the white highlights and the dripping red.

Thank you! Oh man, finger-painting is seriously tons of fun, you've gotta try it

I tried it in college! I really had no time for those damned brushes so I just screwed around with my fingers instead!
I pulled the same stunt when I experimented with oil pastels a while back. It's just too fun!

Oh nice! I love traditional painting with brushes too, but it's a lot of trouble with drying canvas, toxic/stinky paints, turpentine etc.
Did you take any specific art classes?

I would like to learn painting but it seems a bit scary to jump from pens and ink to brushes and paint on a big canvas. I don't mind the smell, but keeping brushes clean, paint separated and having to work without my precious markers is scary! Ha ha
Hm, well not specific in that we majorly studied any single form of art, but I did take a course on Video Game Art and Animation.

Well it's not like you have to start painting on gigantic canvas - one might as well go with tiny A5 pics for the start. Also, one can mix media like markers and watercolors!
Ah, I see^^

Oh that's true too isn't it.
I... actually didn't know you could mix markers and watercolours... Well I guess I did, really, because my friend uses ink and watercolours, but I didn't even consider trying the same. Though that is something I could get into.
Yeah, it was a two year course, nothing drastically impressive, but I liked it. I wish I'd worked a bit harder at the digital stuff, but that's only so I'd be more capable of finding a job, my heart is all about traditional. I love feeling the medias and putting myself into it.
Did you take any art courses?

Veitstanzproject In reply to JTHMFrAeK [2015-06-27 22:10:56 +0000 UTC]

You totally can! Like you can mix Copic markers, watercolour, gel pen, acrylic and a bit of indian ink in one pic and it still works  - here's an example by me(Maria) from my private account: alvene.deviantart.com/art/The-…
Well, any course is a step forward. We both did take some drawing and painting courses, like figure drawing, oil painting etc.

Wow! Are you even human?! Ha ha that's so cool.
My brother just got me Copic markers for my birthday, I'm eager to try them out but I was expecting coloured ones, not just black... oh well, they'll still be cool.
Amazing what you can come up with when you're willing to try something new, eh?!
Oh okay neat. In my course we did figure drawing every Friday, I really enjoyed it, but not for the models ha ha. I found it was a great way too improve my knowledge with anatomy and introduced me to some interesting medias. We only ever tried watercolour and acrylic paint, no oil.

It's actually far easier than pure watercolors! You simply have more control over ink and markers, watery paint is a whole different story.
Well those are real expensive, we don't really have all the necessary colours either. They are SO convenient and perfect for blending!
Oil is very cool, but it takes time due to the drying and you need a very well-aired room to paint with it. It's a lot of fun though!

Oh that's really cool! So do you put down your markers and ink first and then use the watercolours or would you do your thing with the watercolours and then add details with your markers and ink?
Yeah that's what I've heard about them, though I should probably get more used to colouring with normal things like the watercolours I have, the coloured pencils or the crayons I've got a lot of before I go to the super expensive markers that I could mess up and destroy and hate myself for ha ha!
I can imagine! I wouldn't want to know what kind of buzz you'd get off of working with oil in a poorly-ventilated room. I know when I was just working on my posters with black marker I got pretty high by accident and did not come down for a while. I'd like to try them out but I think I'll wait until after I've tried the other kinds of painting a bit more.

Watercolor first, then everything else, since markers can be ruined by water.
Sure, if you feel unsure, work yourself forward to the expensive marksers. Keep in mind though that different materials are not interchangeable. E.g. you could have problems adjusting to the markers after becoming good at coloring with watercolors, since they handle quite differently imo.

Oh okay, that makes a lot of sense!
Oh of course! What I meant was just working on my colour schemes and learning what ones go best with each other. I'm more of a monochrome kinda guy, I've always had trouble with colours and blending, unless they were darker colours. I'm very curious to see how the markers blend, but I suppose I could fix that with a youtube video. Ha ha

Both of us work overwhelmingly monochrome. Maike e.g. used to use just super colorful palettes when she first transitioned form monochrome to color (in retrospective she likes to call it "eye cancer" or "puking the rainbow"), still has a taste for it, but much more subdued. That´s an art tutorial I showed her once, it´s pretty great imo purplekecleon.deviantart.com/a…

I really enjoy monochrome. It suites a lot of what I'm trying to convey so I stick with it. I've been told that I excel at it so it's hard for me to try and shy away from it, but I really would like to diversify my skills and become stronger as an artist.
Ha ha! That's hilarious! You've gotta start somewhere, eh! Thanks so much for the video, I bookmarked it, I'll have to read through it later, I just skimmed for now.
I just watched a video on copic marker blending. It looks a bit tricky, but fairly simple. I would say with some practice you could get quite used to it.

Good attitude! Contemplacy is nice, but you won´t improve. Like those people who never draw hands because they can´t draw hands: That´s a vicious circle.

Thanks! I'm going to try to put it into practice!
Yeah I have a hard time with hands but I'm trying to do them more now. Though, for my comic I'm simplifying them, just to cut down on time, since the comic's pretty stylized anyway, I do realize there is a need to be able to draw hands!

You might be interested in the work of Ted Nafeih then. His inking is amazing and his hands are very stylized and simple.
Google "Courtney Crumrin", for example, it gives you an idea.

Oh okay! Interesting! I looked him up (Just a short glimpse). He has a very interesting style, I will have to look into him further.
Yes, her hands are simple, but nonetheless valid as hands, I see what you mean. Right now I'm doing this thing where as a general rule my characters have a forefinger and thumb, but the rest of the hand is more of a mitten type-thing. Until, at least, I need the character to have more distinct fingers. Keeping it simple for now but it's something to work at.
