Description Finally my part for my art trade with Eureka747 is finished! I hope it was worth the wait. (I took a really long time, sorry!)

His part is here .

I had a lot of fun with the beach theme! I was happy with how the sand, the surf, and, in particular, Scarlett's face came out. (Still need to work on overall anatomy, but I say that all the time, haha.) I based Scarlett's bathing suit on her regular outfit .  Oh, and something else that might be notable is Miyu's new haircut! I'd been toying around with the idea of giving her a short bob for a while now and I think it's pretty cute, if I do say so myself. (And she has freckles!)

OHHH MY GOOOODDDNESS, I am not worthy! *Grabs a tanto and commits japanese ritual suicide*

This is some next level, out of this world, over the fence, and beyond the stars masterpiece!!! I know - I know, what a surprisingly dramatic way to begin a response, but this is going to be fun. To begin, that's one beautiful smile that Scarlett is expressing (it definitely reminds me of the Sun-Maid girl and her raisins). Ah wow Miyu reborn, the shorter hair and freckles are wonderful features that make her additionally cuter in special ways, and that determination with the salute. Once more, another piece well balance by you I must admit. From how I see it, the perspective is dead on and the colour palette was a rainbow success. You have enough of every colour without having them competing against each other. I assume your analogous blues and oranges (that you mentioned in another conversation) paid off. Moving on to their outfits, that is pretty awesome that you kept Scarlett's outfit concept and transformed it into a bathing suit - very elegant with a touch of etiquette if you ask me. The precision on how you executed that flower design on Miyu's skirts is well appreciated.

By the way:

> I wonder what is going on in Scarlett's mind with that bucket of water? That moment before...

> How many layers was used in this piece?

Hehe, thank you very much again for doing another art trade with me Vela (with was definitely worth the wait) . This really is a wonderful piece: new outfits, new haircut, and wonderful characters having fun. You know at the end of the day, I'm sure mentally Miyu is truly happy that you drew her again.

Cheers to Howard and you,
-Eureka747

P.S. Just saying this again like last time, but Scarlett and Miyu were a good pick on your part - teehee~

Haha! I'm glad you like it so much! And those are absolutely lovely comments - you really picked up on all the little details! Come to think of it she is reminiscent of the Sun-Maid girl. Glad you like Miyu's update.

I'm glad the colour scheme worked out well. I wasn't really thinking about it at the time, but when I noticed it I started pushing the colours as much as I could without overdoing it. The outfits were really fun to do too. Scarlett's just sort of popped into my head when I looked at pictures of her. And Miyu's skirt was originally going to be plain, but I thought it might need something extra at the last minute (and then I had to find Hawaiian flower print references, haha).

Actually, as soon as you gave me the prompt I had an idea of what I wanted to do. I ended up going with the split second before the water dump and leave the rest to the imagination. I'm sure Scarlett is not really thinking of the retribution she's going to receive after that. XD

Ah, the layers. I actually didn't count before I compressed it all, so I'm going to estimate somewhere between 35-40. I used a ton of clipping group layers for pretty much everything; for instance, Miyu's skirt had three clipping groups on top of the base layer.

I'm really glad we did the art trade (and I'm so glad it was worth the wait). It was awesome to draw Miyu again and Scarlett is such a beautiful character to work with.

Hehe as they say, all the little things/details add up to make the big picture. Of course, I'll take those features into consideration the next time I draw Miyu.

It was all part of the plan that you made up along the way, it's super effective. I can imagine, a very linear/symmetrical outfit design for Scarlett: I guess she is easier to identify with those lines that she is always wearing, ooooohhhhh Hawaiian - it's still awesome with how the design/flower stems overlays with each other.

And the moral is that no matter how dangerous a laser ninjato could potentially be, a bucket of water and regret are more dangerous.

Ahhh 35-40 layers, if that's the case how many were used for Scarlett and Miyu's face?

You know me, it's no problem how long you take as long as you do not forget. And plus, I'm sure the cottage life can fun too. Hopefully in the future, you'll get more opportunities to draw Miyu - it's becoming another luxury that we are going to sincerely miss from four years ago.

Thank you, that'd be great.

Yes, it definitely was easier. I'm sure she'd look pretty cute in other outfits though. Ah, thanks. That part was surprisingly fun to do (I thought it'd be tedious), but I liked the end result.

For sure. XD

Yeah... If you're going with all the features on the face (eyes, lips, pores, etc.) I'd have to say 6, though that is for the overall skin too.

Thanks so much. X3 I hope so too! I really enjoyed drawing her this time around and I've actually been sketching her more because of it. I really want to try and do more artwork when I can - I'm so lazy about just practicing as it is.

I'm sure she would too, I just have not had the time to create newer outfits for her yet. <__< I'm glad to hear that it was fun to create patterns.

That makes sense, doubling your odds to make it even is pretty cleaver. I would usually use 3 layers, but that's just me. And plus I sure you're more committed to your digital works and such. Got to get ready for that web comic of yours.

No problem at all, and that is awesome news to hear that she is being drawn more. Being lazy for the win, who needs practice when you have imagination?

Yeah, the time issue seems to be common among all of us nowadays.

Well it's all for different textures and whatnot. I actually have to get simpler with my approach to digital art for a comic.

Haha, right.

Time... Our only weakness.

A more cartoony approach to the web comics I suppose? Just a suggestion of course, I'm sure you have an ace up your sleeves.

Well it would definitely be a little more comic book looking with sharper line work. And it would be more cell shaded and less blended. Really I still have to figure it out, haha.

I see, just wondering but is it going to be in greyscale or are you planning to just have it colour? Haha, comic wars all over again!

I'd like it to be in colour and I think that'd doable (just not right now, haha). Comic wars?

Eureka747 In reply to Velassera [2014-07-17 14:58:27 +0000 UTC]

It is doable of course, it just depends on how many colours you are dealing with? You know, like back in grade four when everybody did comics - I remember at the time that you were into dragons and how you liked colouring your comics. Of course (greyscale in pencil or colour) smudging was more frequent after page one since the sides were touching each other.

Velassera In reply to Eureka747 [2014-07-17 15:28:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think it'll be fairly stylized, so the colour palette is going to be slightly limited. Should be fun to work with though. Ah, okay, I remember now. I think I did the same story over and over again since I had (and still have) issues with redoing stuff. And doing a comic digitally or with inks and stuff would definitely solve the smudging thing. I'm still into dragons, by the way. I just haven't done any full pieces or posted any sketches yet (though I do think I've gotten better at drawing them, haha). There a big part of my world building stuff.

Speaking of fairly sized, any idea what dimensions you are going to use for each page? Are they going to be fixed and uniformed or are they going to vary for each page? lol, I did not notice that since I only got the chance to look at your comic two or three times (too busy debating with Shouvik and Brandon about copyrights and stuff - they really did love their stick figures). As true as that may be, bleeding ink is still an fun experience - unless it gets all over your clothes and such. Unfortunately for me, I can't draw a proper dragon.

Ah, I said stylized, but that's okay. I have no clue about the dimensions right now; like I say, everything is pretty hypothetical right now. I'm hoping to mix it up a little in terms of panels and pages - I don't want everything to be really rigid. There's one webcomic artist in particular whose layouts I really admire. Haha, yeah well I tend to do that with every project I start, whether it's a comic, writing, or art (and oh god, I can definitely picture that). Aw, well I'm sure you could learn to. You have to start somewhere with everything.
