Description I recently worked on an exhibition at a local historic house showing pieces of costume and accessories from their collection. I selected the items for display, designed and organised the displays and researched and designed all the labelling. It was hard work to get it done on a short time scale, but the end result was a great achievement and felt amazing. My photos of the actual exhibition as a whole are not that great quality as I only had my phone camera, but some of the close ups of the individual items turned out okay.

This is a little montage I put together for the blog post about the exhibition that will be going up on the new website, once it's finally up and running!!

The idea was to showcase the whole scope of the collection, so the displays were themed around colours/visual impact as opposed to dates. These were from the 'Gold Dresser' display which had a cream/gold colour theme. Clockwise from top left; 19th century silk fan, c.1920 beaded evening dress, two c.1930s beaded purses and lastly a pair of c.1920s gold brocade evening shoes with diamante buckles.

It is pretty amazing, and very inspiring! If only it left me with more free time to draw... lol.

Wow! I'm sure it was incredible to see the labor people put into handcrafting these pieces.

It's surprising really when you look inside some of the pieces in the collection, the stuff that was on display was all really beautifully made but some of it is just tacked together so messily on the inside that it is hard to understand how it looks so good on the right side!

Wow! So glad you did this. Curator work is fun, and not everyone gets to be so close to such great detail.

It was amazing to be able to see these items so up close, I think I fell in love with them all a bit. It really helped when I had to give a talk for people like the museum trustees and a couple of other curators - I was so enthusiastic and excited about the items I almost forgot to be nervous. Almost being the operative word... haha.

Yeah, how were women's feet so small then? Did they bind them or did they just have really narrow feet?

I don't know. It's kind of like a chicken and egg thing, were their feet narrow because they squeezed them into narrow shoes all their lives? Or were their shoes only narrow because their feet were that narrow anyway?
