Description Got bored and decided to do a plane for a little competition...
The theme was modernizing old school fighter jets, so I chose the sexy F-8 Crusader...

Changes over a normal F-8E:
P&W F119 engine
MATV exhaust nozzle
Dual 25mm GAU-12 Equalizer gatling guns
Two more wing hardpoints
AN/APG-81 radar from the F-35
Single piece windscreen
DSI air intake
Digital flight control system (was already tested in an F-8 before lol)

It now has a maximum speed of a Mach 2.4 (up from 1.8), can carry up to 12 air to air missiles, and will kick other light weight fighters in the face. Fleet defense never looked so sexy XD

Ok.

Would it have to be from an old airframe or a newly built one?

Either. Though, since the Crusader has long since been retired it probably would need to be a new build anyway.

Now this is old school meets new school.

Indeed. Have ideas for other upgraded combat aircraft also, though ain't bothered drawing any more besides this and F-14E...

I'm sorry, are you asking me if I had any ideas for any upgraded legacy aircraft?

Just a little weekly competition we usually do on Electrosphere.info, an Ace Combat fan site.

Okay, cool. I guess AC:3 (or was it 2?) is a good game

They got info on all AC games, from the first Air Combat all the way to Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. Mostly info about the weapons, people, and places used in AC games. The site itself is named after Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere.

NICE! a single gatling will be more then enough to replace the original 4 guns. (1 will take as much space as those guns, for 2 you must lenghten the hull)
other then that point, looking great! I now have an idea for an new fighter, I might make something similar

lol, the dual GAU-12's are small enough to fit in the space that the quad 20mm Mk12 cannons would fit in. There were twin Mk12's on each side of the F-8. Each GAU-12 replaces the twin Mk12's, which is how I have room for the dual gatlings. That and the GAU-12 is only slightly bigger externally than the smaller caliber M61 Vulcan. The A-7 Corsair II originally had a single Mk12, but it was replaced by a M61 due to the Mk12 being rather... crappy lol
Plus, an F-8 ain't and F-8 without some absurd amount of gun firepower. After all, it was the "Last of the Gunfighters"

true.... but the space would not be taken up by the gun itself, but by it's ammo. it is possible indeed, but one would be good enough. remember, the m61 and GUA 12 can have explosive bullets (in fact they are called cannons) where the mk12 only was an heavy machinegun.

I dunno if I'd call a 20mm auto cannon a heavy machinegun >__>
After all, that is the same caliber as the M61 Vulcan, although it fires a slightly longer projectile. The similar Pontiac M39 cannons in the F-5 fired the same ammo as the M61 though. Both the Mk12 and M39 are revolver type auto-cannons, similar to British ADEN and French DEFA cannons.
Anyway I will stick to dual guns, since it is more... fitting for the aircraft. Plus, with the changes to the internal structure of the airframe (the plane really only looks like an F-8), I should easily be able to stuff around 500 rounds of 25mm ammo.

ok.
btw.... per definition the difference between cannons and guns in aircraft is that an gun fires solid steel bullets, and an cannon fires explosive or incendiary grenades. it was that way in WW2, but at later developments the difference wasn't that great anymore, because many cannons could fire normal bullets as well.

I always figured the difference was more the caliber the weapon fires. I had always heard that 20mm was the smallest to be considered a cannon. Either way, I tend to use cannon and gun interchangeably, since everyone does lol
