Description Hey y'all! Have this night fury x light fury hybrid redesign that I drew during my biochem lecture instead of, like, paying attention.

So, I'm a big dragon fan. I love them in MLP, in HTTYD, in GoT, everywhere. My roommate and I were watching some House of the Dragon, and that somehow led me into watching HTTYD clips to satiate my dragon craving, and I ended up here.

I have a lot of thoughts about HTTYD: The Hidden World. Not many positive ones, I'm afraid. For me, this movie was like a big slap in the face back when it was released, and to this day I'm still not a fan of it, or its ending. No hate to anyone out there who enjoys the movie, it's just not for me. I grew up on Hiccup and Toothless, so seeing them separated at the end was honestly devastating for me, though I understand the implied message.

Anyway, if there's one thing I genuinely, wholly, fully hate about the movie, it's the Light Fury. I hate her design, I hate her personality, I hate her plot hole existence, I hate everything about her. If we were gonna do the love story thing, I would've much preferred to see Toothless encounter another Night Fury. I feel like that would've been much more impactful for him and for Hiccup, an indication that Toothless wasn't the last of his species after all. The bloodline wouldn't have to end with him.

But a sparkly white forcefully cute moon dragon is what we got instead, so whatever.

Another thing I'm not a fan of is the Night Light designs. There was a way to make the Light and Night Fury genes co-dominant without making the Night Lights so... atrocious. The designs are just so uninspired in my opinion. For those who may not be aware, co-dominance is when both parent's genes are dominant, making both of their colors show up on offspring. Incomplete dominance, however, is what I would have preferred, as I feel it makes the baby dragons match more aesthetically with their parents overall. Incomplete dominance is when their colors mix, so Toothless's black and Light Fury's white would've led to grey offspring. I lowkey even would've preferred split dominance, so 2 hatchlings black and 1 white or something, idk. ANYTHING but what we got bro

So all that being said, here's my redesign for Dart, the only female of the hatchlings. In canon, she is primarily black with white paws, ear tips, tail tips, and underbelly. She’s also the only one who has blue eyes.

I tried to keep some of the original design traits in my redesign. She’s of course got the blue eyes, the lighter ear tips, and light underbelly. But beyond that I kind of remixed everything else. I don’t like the name “Dart” either, and have renamed her to Seasmoke, but I did try to stay somewhat true to her name by using a poison dart frog as inspiration for her body markings. Also, if you’re wondering, she’s not missing her left wing, I just intentionally left it out to show her body design. That pink spot on her shoulder is where it would go. The inside of her wing would be the same color as her back.

Here's another thing I hate. The “female versions of characters will be soft and curvy and pink and pretty” thing, something they animated so obnoxiously with Toothless and the Light Fury. Some more examples of this are the deers from Open Season, the squirrels from Ice Age, the toucans from Rio, the girl version of Stitch, the sloths in the Croods movies, and the goddamn penguins from Happy Feet 😭 I think one of the only times it’s ever been done right has been with Puss and Kitty Softpaws. Anywayyy, I really tried to avoid that here, so despite being a female dragon, Seasmoke has no lashes, not as many soft curves as her mother does, and she even has some so-called “masculine” spikes. But overall, her body plan does take more after her mother’s in that she is very aerodynamic and not as sharp-looking as Toothless. Her mid tail fins are connected to her wings but can be moved individually for finer adjustments in flight. Her tail fin is the same shape as the Light Fury’s but is just as important for flight, cuz it keeps her balanced. She has three main spikes on her wings before the membrane diverges into a softer texture. And she can use her first wing claw as another leg of sorts.

But primarily, and given her namesake, Seasmoke is a dragon of the sea. She was raised near the harshest ocean waves and learned to fly here, and as an adult it’s very easy for her to blend into sea rocks. Her legs are much longer than her parents, which allows her to run fast on land as well. Overall, she’s very swift. A fast, elegant, regal flier, but she’s also fragile. Unlike most other dragons, her flesh is very easy to pierce. She’s soft, and her scales aren’t as tough compared to those of her siblings. And despite preferring ocean environments, Seasmoke can't actually swim very well. She's def a flier.

Zephyr Haddock claims Seasmoke as her mount, and the two become bonded for life. This means Seasmoke will not take another rider as long as Zephyr lives. In my HC, Hiccup reconnects with Toothless in the end scene of movie 3, and he once again becomes Toothless's rider. So I'm like kind of pretending that Hiccup and Toothless ride together again eventually, 10ish years after Hiccup let him go.

Like her father, Seasmoke loves fish. It’s her meal of choice. Also like Toothless, her dragonfire is a soft blue color, the same color as her eyes. Seasmoke is a very independent dragon, and doesn’t interact much with others beyond her siblings, parents, and rider. Zephyr and Seasmoke have an extremely close bond, much like Hiccup and Toothless (who had the strongest dragon bond of any original dragon riders). Seasmoke is ferociously protective over Zephyr, and Zephyr, like her mother, is a fearless dragon rider.

Bonus HC:
At the end of the movie, Toothless immediately recognizes Astrid on the boat, since she looks pretty much the same. Who he doesn't recognize is Hiccup, who has grown a full beard lol. He is initially hostile because Astrid and her kids look terrified, and he at first believes they need protecting from this mystery man. Luckily, one whiff of Hiccup and Toothless recognized his scent immediately, thus letting his guard down.

Here's some different versions of this, one with shading, and the OG sketch!
