100 Pic Challenge : 016: Questioning

Maybe it’s because I’m crazy
Or maybe it’s because I just can’t honestly tell you what I want
It’s never enough to stay still and hold you
To break loose and run the taste of you wild on my tongue
Am I no good to you now?
Am I no good to you now?
“Falling Apart” – Matt Nathanson

She’d been on edge all night, from the moment he’d handed her the garment bag and told her to go change. She had been merely suspicious at that point and maybe a bit excited once she opened the bag to find the beautiful gown and mask inside. When he had escorted her to this charity event, she had been pleasantly surprised. He had brushed it off, telling her it was something he’d thought she’d enjoy – and she had been working so hard lately, what with Aku still away on family business, and didn’t she deserve to have some fun, too?

Dancing with him had taken her back to when they were kids, and despite every warning bell in her head – every last scrap of logic – she had found herself falling for him all over again. The resurfacing emotions had effectively ruined her night, and she found she was a nervous wreck around him again – something she hadn’t missed. She had told herself she was over him. She had told herself it was just a silly crush, back when they were kids. She had told herself living with him all this time, getting to know him again, meant nothing.

But it was nearly midnight, and they were still dancing and laughing like the old friends they were, and she couldn’t figure him out. Most days he was just her friend, that good buddy she loved to argue and joke around with. But then he would do something like this, and she’d catch that look when she knew he thought she didn’t see, and it left her so confused. He’d hold her like this, sing along with the song the band played, and she could forget for a moment that they had always just been friends. That they would always just be friends.

And when he finally escorted her home, kissing her hand like she was some princess, she felt her heart flip painfully and – even as he went to pull her closer – she ran. She fled to her room, pressed her back against the door, and relived those last few moments as panic swept through her. Even as she heard him on the other side of her door, begging her to just talk to him – to let him apologize – she felt her heart twist again and sunk to the floor in a sea of skirts and fear.

…they were just friends, right? And that was all they would ever be, wasn’t it? Just friends?
