Back in 2007, I posted a visual hair tutorial and I feel horrible about it. I feel bad because it's outdated, pretty ugly and has over 7000 views. I'm deeply sorry.To redeem myself, I created last night a brand new tutorial that shows how to paint semi-realistic hair. To achieve realism, or at least a higher level of completion, you would simply need to add more detail to the hair. This particular hair took me about 15 minutes to do.

Really helpful tutorial, thank you. ^_^ One problem I have though is making the hair look like it's part of the body, it always seems to float or look out of place with the rest of the head. Any tips? Thanks.

Aha, this is awesome! I've always been decent at creating hairstyles, but I've only made it to the first step of shading them xD I'll have to use this for my latest drawing.

What are your brush settings and what do you work with?

Always 100% - the tablet's sensitivity does the rest. You can achieve that with Photoshop's regular brushes. I usually dab in the second set of hard round brushes that came with CS4. But others work as well

If you have a lot of time and patience... perhaps! I would definitely advise any artist who uses a computer to draw to buy a tablet. The Bamboo line is actually pretty affordable, starting around $80

For most dark hairs yes, but when it comes to blondes/redheads/any other colour hairs it just looks awful, but thank you
