I hate the front page of Deviant Art. When I type in DeviantArt to my browser, the first thing I see is "what's hot." I am not belittling the skills of the artists who are seen on that landing page. But it's a waste. It's showing the skills of artists who get lots of page views. Basically put, if you are popular, that landing page reinforces it. I think that is drawback of this site. At one time you saw daily deviations, which were an honor to get and I think -- new submissions, popular 24 hours, if I remember correctly. Now I have a question, how does that keep people interested? That doesn't say you have a chance at greatness. I mean, I worked my ass off to get people to notice my art, there was an incentive. Now what do you have? What's f------ hot... How unfortunate?Anyways, check this one out, but I mean really.
Give it love... Not too much love. Just send it favorites.

I agree and buying views(core membership) is bullshit, shouldn't be like that with art. Still enjoy DA.

I don't think being a core member helps with views, it didn't to make a difference when someone gave me that as a gift.Β

Its become a children's colouring book, the disturbing part is this art is coming from people who are old enough to know better, as in people in there 20's creating drawings of teletubbies for example. Its weird......i often question why im here, the only reason that comes to me is the work i have put in to create an artistic catalogue.

Well, it's been, mostly a grown children's coloring book, since I can remember, I moaned about that in the past. But now it seems like they are dishing it out to all the others, like rotting spam. I am here for the art, but also the conversations I can get started only by writing about the weird stuff that goes on here.Β

just bookmark DDs or undiscovered or skip directly to your watch, as I do. there's no need to look at what's hot.
Like the rejected deviation btw, I personally would have accepted it if it fit the criteria.

I have my own page bookmarked. It's what I check first. As designer, though, I know the landing page is the most viewed part of a site. It should be of value to those who use the site. When they place popular items only on that page it's discouraging to a newer audience who wants only to be there and yet, with all you have to do tho get there, it's a bit nerve racking.Β
At this point here on da I care more about my experience with the art and people and not so much about being a top artist here. But others not so much. They want something to feed their ego, understandably so, it's human nature. This site is a great resource and it would be a shame if they kept spoiling it.

well it's true that what the biggest part of the dA userbase deems interesting is very far from what people like you and I would consider art, or meaningful art at least. I don't like the stuff you see on what's hot either, but i think dA would be a traitor to their users if they pretended that "high art" was this site's primary focus. Maybe it was at some point, many years ago, but clearly it isn't anymore. We have to come to terms with it: The furries have won. We, the "artists", are a minority, a subculture. Either we have to accept that or use a different platform.

I personally don't see any REAL ART on the home page myself. Anime, cartoon art and porno has been done to death (in my opinion). Quite boring actually. Good taste is a thing of the past for the MOST PART. I, myself want to see something more substantial and realistic. I have my DA speed dial set to my notifications page. That way, I never have to look at that stuff and I get right to what I am interested in. My groups, my watches, etc. The rest of it can go away for all I care. If I want something of interest, I look at my groups and that is how I have found some of the best artists that DA has to offer (in my opinion).
I agree with you VexingArt, but unfortunately this is the way of the world and it will get worse, not better. And more importantly, DA is not all there is, nor will it ever be.
And on the image that was rejected - I find it curiously interesting myself. When you look at that image it plainly and quite accurately describes DA. I'll just leave it at that.

I have nothing against Anime, I just don't care to see so much of it. I still have no clue about porn on this site, it makes no sense, there are tons of free places for that stuff and they have more receptive audience to go with it.Β Β
I took a long hiatus from this site and was surprised by how much it went down the tubes. Still interesting, but it's not the same.Β
I am on Instagram as well and yet it's like share this and a someone saying "nice." No real comments to be had and a lot of spam.

Just know that those who are meant to see or appreciate your work will. That's a fact. And as with all things, they degrade over time. There is nothing that can be done to stop it (in spite of what some may say). It's life, the natural order of things.
Keep doing what you do and there are those of us out there who will look forward to seeing it. Even if only one person is moved by your work, that's one person's life who has been affected. Better than if you had done nothing at all.
I know that sounds preachy and it wasn't intended that way, just a few words of encouragement. I hope they were taken that way.
Keep bringing those shots, I know I look forward to them!

At this point I don't think it's about people seeing my work, I have had numerous dd's and at a point my photos could get a couple thousand likes in hours. U even stopped posting, it was boring. I was thinking about how others may want to have that experience and are being let down so that DA can maximize there page count instead of being a real leader.Β
Nothing lasts forever, we all live in this single moment, the present. I am not even made of the same matter as when I started on this site. But if I say nothing all my thoughts stay inside and have little chance of influencing anyone.Β

You're right. I see your point.
However, my situation is different in that I moved away from the source that I was shooting. To get to it now would take more than I am willing to put into it. But I wouldn't say that I have stopped posting. Just not worried about it for DA's sake. IF I see something of interest and have a camera handy, then I'll go for it, other than that, it is what it is.

It wasn't always like this, after they made the phone apps it seems like they changed the format. On the mobile site, you can see dd's at top and what's shot, err, hot. On the desktop, not so lucky. I generally go to my page first... Only because I don't see what deviantart has as "hot."
