The Skull Heart is an artifact with the ability to grant wishes, albeit at a substantial cost. The Skullgirl is a monster that haunts humanity; the result of those with an impure soul attempting to use the Heart. Marie is the current Skullgirl, and formerly a friend of Patricia, aka Peacock. She and Peacock hail from an area outside of the Canopy Kingdom known as No-Man's Land, a wasteland that used to be a country but fell during the war with the Canopy Kingdom. There, she and Peacock were child slaves. When Peacock was taken in by the Medici Mafia to be experimented on, Marie tried to use the Skull Heart to destroy her friend's oppressors, turning her into the being she is today. With the power of the Skull Heart in her, Marie can summon undead minions, use her maid skills to cleanse the world of her enemies, and even vacuum up the corpses of the fallen to increase her own power.
