Description

Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the band tributes again. Today it's Iron Maiden. This band have been around for thirty years and are currently on tour and releasing a new album this September, let's get to history.

Iron Maiden began in the late 70's by bass guitarist Steve Harris. After a couple line up changes initially the band settled with guitarists Dave Murray, and Dennis Straton, drummer Clive Bur, and vocalist Paul Di'Anno. They released their first album, self titled Iron Maiden in 1980.

The album received positive reviews and got the band going immediately. They became one of the many metal groups to become popular alongside Judas Priest, Metallica, and Motörhead. The band continued and toured successfully, in between time Dennis Straton left due to differences with Harris and road manager, and guitarist Adrian Smith was hired in his place. The band then released their second album Killers in 1981.

During the tour to promote Killers, conflict arose with singer Paul Di'Anno. His constant drug abuse, and self destructive behavior became too unbearable and was putting a strain on the band. Di'Anno was fired from the band in the middle of the tour and the band then hired singer Bruce Dickinson after an audition, from which he filled the spot for the rest of the Killers tour.

The band got to work on their next album with Dickinson on vocals for the first time. From there they released The Number of the Beast in 1982. The album was critically acclaimed and a huge commercial success. It trademarked the bands signature sound and songwriting skills to the max.

The tour that followed was successful and was the first world tour for Dickinson. Unfortunately  there was much controversy. Parents and Christian fundamentalist groups attacked the album and called it Satanic because of its content. They burned and destroyed the albums, held riots in the streets, and even tried to boycott the concerts. I've said that dubbing heavy metal as Satanic pisses me off but what these people did over an album just enrages me so much.

In spite of that the band continued. What followed was a period of success. Amazing albums were released like Poweslave, Piece of Mind, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. The band showed their talents in each of these albums with their great musicianship, and powerful lyrics. The band also were one of the first metal bands to incorporate the use of guitar synthesizers and keyboards, something that people felt was initially uncommon and inferior to metal music.

The 90's were not the best time for Iron Maiden though. Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith departed to pursue solo careers, but there wasn't any fighting about it and was a mutual agreement. The band continued and brought in Janick Gers who is very good and still tours with the band as a third guitarist. The albums in the 90's weren't all that great, they certainly weren't terrible but felt both  sluggish and lazy in comparison to the older albums. One album that did get my attention was The X Factor which was very dark in comparison to the previous records and is initially an underrated album.

When Dickinson and Smith returned around the early 2000's things took a turn for the better. The albums were alive again and it felt like life was brought back. In 2010 the band released The Final Frontier which was immediately acclaimed and got the band their first Grammy with the song El Dorado for Best Hard Rock/Metal performance. Now they're going to released a new album called Book of Shadows this coming September and all of us fans hope for the best with this new record.

I love Iron Maiden and am a huge follower in their work citing many members as inspirations particularly guitarist Adrian Smith. This band is one of the many great metal bands and still hold a place in the genre today. I'm looking forward to Book of Shadows and think it will be another great album. Rock on Iron Maiden.
