Description Another step in making the feline humanoid. Using the warped skulls (in the scraps gallery) as a guideline, I did some rough sketches of the head.

In the upper part are photos of an infant and adult male chimp. A significant amount of human features are due to neoteny, the retention of juvenile characteristics into an adult form - note how much more 'human' the young chimp looks. I figured the felinoids would work the same way, so I did drawings of a 4 week old, 2 and a half month old and 9 month old cat's head (leaving out extra details like whiskers). The final drawing of the felinoid was based on a combo of the two.

This is only showing the last, "Human" stage. It's not an evolutionary chart.Β

the efects of neoteny in humans is being able to learn new things easier like a child thats why humans are smart

I'm curious about its diet. Β Would it still be strictly carnivorous like the cat of today, or would it adapt to an omnivorous lifestyle like our species?

If its still carnivorous, would it still have to live in small hunter and gatherer groups?

That's a good question - cats are very heavily modified to be carnivores, it's hard to see them readapting to be omnivorous. They might live something like the Maasi, as nomadic herders. I suppose they might eventually catch on to agriculture to feed their herds, but it would might take them longer than it did us. Then again it might not, apparently the hardest concept for early farmers was 'plant the best stuff' rather than 'eat the best stuff, plant the leftovers'.Β

The only way I could think of for a feline-like species to adapt to agriculture in a short amount of time would be if they had been modified artificially by a higher-level civilization, maybe a human one that had now gone extinct. Β

I have an alternate earth species called a Gerdin that have young that resemble kittens and once they're weaned, feed on a largely meat-based diet. Β Then in eleven months, they lose much of their body fur and start to resemble a humanoid with someΒ feline-like features and retractable claws. Β They also adapt to an omnivore diet, although they would suffer from nutritional deficiency should they visit our world. Β

This is fascinating. I really don't know about the anatomy of the felinoid-type alien I'm working on. I probably made her a bit too human. I really didn't want her looking like a furry anthro.

It's really difficult to make a catlike humanoid and not make it look like a furry, because cats have rather humanlike faces to begin with.

I know. What really bugs me is there's not enough realistic cat humanoids on dA. People still draw the Anime Catgirl/boy kind with human-like skin, noses, hair and ears at the top of their heads whereas your depiction show an evolutionary possible design--the ears being situated on the side of the head.

Don't even get me started on the ones where they have human AND cat ears XD

I really admire your work and in-depth study of the similarities in the anatomy and how they can be morphed. I'm working on a similar project with photomanipulation in photoshop, but I'm having a bit of trouble with I guess what would be called the snout or jowl area, and making it look cat-like. Any advice you could offer would be great.
Great job with the artwork!!

When it comes to evolution, this actually sort of makes sense:

Imagine a group of cats that spend most of their time in trees or other high places. The cats that are best built for such a lifestyle are most likely to survive long enough to pass on their genes. Eventually, you have cats that are similarly-built to monkeys or lemurs. But say some of these lemur-cats end up inhabiting the ground. It is likely that they may become bipedal to search for prey over tall grass and such...VOILA! You have yourself a breed of humanoid felines! That, plus the fact that almost all animals have the potential for eventually possessing human-like intelligence (I believe), then this design you have here is absolutely incredibly awesome!
