Description PLEASE BIG VIEW
WindHaven is a fortress and landing zone way up in the sky above the endless seas of the planet 'Teal'. Just this moment a small spaceglider is nearing one of the the landingplatforms. Below a pair of dolphins and a seal are playing in the sea

Traditional Encaustic Waxart

That technique is called encaustic (from the greek word for branding).

By applying special colored beewax into the hot sole of the iron and spreading the hot molten wax onto a special sealed/coated paper card I'm able to create different patterns and designs and with the tip or rim of the iron I can even create animals, plants and buildings. But it did take some practice to do that

Used the knife to scrape/shape the bridges stairs and finer parts of the fortress as well as the eyes of the seal and dolphins.

I had a workshop on Encaustic painting yesterday. After realising just how goddamn hard it is, I truely admire your ability.

I've held a small encaustic workshop this weekend fore some friends of mine and I'm quite amazed what loveley pictures they created and on the other hand how much difficulties or rather respect some of them seemed to have working with the iron. My conclusion : One either loves doing encustic artworks or hates doing so... strangely there are only very few in-betweens [at least considering my trainee group].

This one is so great. I love the colors and more than that, the value contrasts, depth and detail of a great scene. It reminds me of the best cover art. I could easily see this as an SF book cover.

Looks awesome as always, the only thing i noticed was that the islands in the sky look abit crooked

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Villa-Chinchilla In reply to zlither [2004-06-30 14:03:30 +0000 UTC]

THANK YOU Those islands in the sky are supposed to be some sort of hmmmm... opened up half or 3quarter planets with the castle-rocks somehow groing out of them

Wasn't easy to shape those round 'isklands' by using the iron without making too much fuzz and mess around and destroy most of the sky Because to create such forms you have to tilt the iron to one side only using the outer edges....

it's relly pretty!! i love this technique!
the colours are soft and dreamy.. and you gave the ocean great depth and 3D effect!
the drawing looks childish but i guess that suits perfectly the general fairy tale - like look
well done! definitely a

how long did it take you to make it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Villa-Chinchilla In reply to BliSS--- [2004-06-30 09:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

To create this picture it took me rough about 2 hours. And yes I tend to draw very childish most of the time It's not easy for me to create those fine desings by ironing and shaping the hot molten wax onto the sealed paper.
