I'm getting a touch of moebius here, which is a good thing .

Thanks! Nice getting props from someone at your skill level. Β  Moebius is a huge influence on my work, one of my favorite artists.

Looks just like one of his pics, his influence is definitely coming through on the shading, love that lots of lines in the same direction thing he did, cool.

thanks! i actually take a lot of crap for my shading technique from people haven't had the European comic experience and don't understand where I'm coming from, so it's really cool when someone with your skills drops by and says " hey i get it "

your spaceships are really cool. Β Nice pen work, especially how the hatching in the shadows follows the contour lines of the ship's surface. Β you've got a real good sense of where the shadows should fall. Β I might like to see more variation in the darkness of the shadows...they're all basically the same.

thanks a lot man and I do appreciate the feedback. You're right, a little variation in the darkness of the shadows would be more aesthetically pleasing, it might even be more accurate for how light effects surfaces. I don't know, that's one of the issues when you don't use a reference. Variation in shading is an issue I'm thinking about a lot right now. I've been working on a style that's almost pure hatching, with little to no crosshatching, using directionality to differentiate surfaces and textures, and with a technical pen, so lineweight is hard to change. It's a really interesting challenge when you come to issues like darker shadows, illusions of depth, etc. and I don't think I'm quite there yet. I'll try to put even more thought into it... I'm starting to have ideas right now in fact

Yeah, I'm doing the same thing...using hatching almost exclusively, rather than cross-hatching, and, well, just what you said.Β  I think it's hard with technical pens.Β  I mean you can use different width tips, but you can't really vary the width of a single line.Β  That's why I've been working with dip pens, and now I'm starting to do some brush work.Β  I can't remember if I've ever mentioned Franklin Booth to you, but you should check out his work.Β  He was an absolute master at this.

Also, have you ever tried building a model of one of your ships using a 3D program?Β  Something like SketchUp is free and pretty easy to learn.Β  It might help, although you have a good sense of 3D already.

Yeah I'm a huge fan of Booth's contribution to the illustrative vocabulary. I've got a signed Bernie Wrightson illustrated Frankenstein in a place of honor on my bookshelf and can literally delve over it for hours. I'll have to think about his work, it may be possible to incorporate some of his techniques without it completely overwhelming my style and taking over. I can't successfully work in that style because I don't have the nerves, so trying to do that kind of dense line work just ends up looking a mess. If you look at my stuff closely it's a lot of little short lines put together the give an impression of longer lines, same reason i can't ink with a brush, I twitch at the wrong time and screw stuff up

and thanks for the tip on sketchup i've seen a lot of people using it but i didn't know it was free. i've been wanting to do some modeling for the comic, drawing spaceships and things once can be a pain but not too bad, drawing complicated machinery multiple times from different angles however, is brutal.

Ha, cool, I've got Wrightson's Frankenstein too...inspiring and intimidating at the same time.Β  I was just chatting with someone about the zen of drawing long lines with a dip pen...you really have to get in the zone, or your hand starts going all over the place.

I just posted a journal about SketchUp, btw.Β  I thought it might be helpful to show people what it can do.

Nice
I like how you shaped the volume in the top part of the ship. It looks realistic. Good drawing! Pen and ink? For the background too?

thanks! Yeah I use a brush pen to fill the large areas and then put in the stars w/ a white gel pen

I'll admit, it can be weird when someone drops a ten stanza critique on you out of nowhere, especially when it feels a touch too glowing

I don't mind a little glow, I admit learning to take compliments is something I struggle with though, probably has something to do with having passed through public school

It's different, isn't it? Yeah, I'll admit, that can still be weird.
