Description Like many of us AVATAR has to be one of my favorite films ever. Love it, hate it, space Pocahontas or not, the creature concepts were astounding and I would surely kill, maim or destroy who ever I have to in order to have a chance to be part of that production team. WOW HARSH MUCH?!
With that being said here is my speculative concepts to the next installment of the franchise.

The rainbow ray, not having any bone structure can virtually collapse/roll up into its light weight shell as a means of protection. Both males and Females produce the light weight shell but a female's shell will also house their eggs. A new shell will be produced throughout their lives as they will out grow them. Mainly feeding on microscopic prey they can be active hunters especially during the breeding season. The large orange organ houses vital organs, aid in detection of predator/prey and for sonar.

My brain can't figure out what side is what at first glance. That could be a good predatory defense!Β

great creature, the only thing i didn't like about Avatar are the Na'Vi, they look humanoid and too familiar except their bioluminescent markings and unique organic USB called Queues, Zypherax once did Na'Vi redesigns that were very alien, but he deleted his Na'Vi art because of art style changes.

I must say, my favorite kind of alien designs are the ones that look like they just can't be from Earth...

This one is great. I'm not even able to tell its head from its tail - and that's a compliment. Because if we found complicated life forms from another planet, it would have to be quite aΒ crazyΒ coincidence to those things clearly resemble Earth animals... More about the creature design; I love how its anatomy clearly has certain "rules" and structures but how alien it still looks. c:

I've gotta agree with ya about Avatar being amazing, especially all the wicked creatures.Β Thanator was probably my fave.Β That film changed my whole world when I saw it... It would be suberb if you got to work on the Avatar production, since you have the amazing gift of imagining truly alien-looking creatures into existence. I mean, making creatures like this just takes the imagination and understanding of animal anatomy to a whole new level... It's easy to make up fantasy creatures which's anatomy is based off Earth animals, but creating a whole functioning anatomy that looks nothing like an Earth animal... That's just really impressive.Β I respect artsist who do that so much. It probably requires a lot of study of evolution, anatomy of different animals and the drawing practice itself...

Your creature designs are among my favorite aliens of DA, I must tell you that!

Thank you so much!!
Once you Β know your anatomy and physiology you can pretty much take your designs anywhere. The creature design for AVATAR truly inspired and informed so many artists, myself included. It brought creature design to a whole new level for sure.Β

You're right. :'D Especially studying the anatomy of creatures that are very different from us humans (like squids and other totally alien-looking things) and educating yourself about how each organ works and how can specific cell types do cool stuff is probably helpful when thinking of aliens.. :'D

excellent I created a avatar game-like avatar, a board game, almost 10 years before avatar, and your creature could well be a part of it!!! wonderful work!

i'm really REALLY digging your stuff...I find your astrobiology to be more alien than barlowe in that you are less bounded by traditional terrestrial biology and get your inspiration from less-utilized (though altogether more strange and beautiful) forms of life (i.e. jellyfish, sea cucumbers, arthropods, fungus, etc))

the Rainbow Ray definitely invokes the aesthetic of certain species of sea cucumbers, perhaps one of the most beautiful and under-appreciated denizens of the deep.

Your designs aren't ugly! just otherworldly and that I think is their positive aspect! This one looks peculiar actually! I have sketched something similar a while back, but I didn't post it, I did it only to practise perspective. It was meant to be generally soft-bodied creature with three pairs of triangular fins, and I did it in a pose with fins in alternating phase, the first and third pair were in a downstroke, the second pair was in an upstroke, it had a beak and a multitude of tiny eyes

thanks, I like to think of them as otherworldly too, but I've seen "ugly" used to describe them as well, so to each their own i guess. it's funny how people can imagine almost identical creatures. you should upload it

Okay! But I'll probably have to draw a cleaner version at first, what I have of this critter are a few really messy sketches

Also, I am sorry to announce this, but the harpypede is going badly, not much progress so far, I have solved the individual parts but I will yet have to find a way how to make it fit a square in a nice way. But I'm working on it, don't worry!
It maybe is that I have picked an unusual subject which I am not used to, and that causes the problems, but all problems have a solution! I just wanted to inform you how things are going on with the harpypede.

I completely understand, I have dozens of mindless doodles unworthy of being shown just yet.

I am more than positive that you will conquer it. It is an unusual configuration to fold, but I've seen some of your work and it is only a matter of time before you figure it out. so keep on keepin on and you'll get it!!

Thanks for the suppert! Yes, I will definitely keep trying, it's something I'd definitely want to add on my list, but to clean my mind from it a little bit, I also work on other models at the same time. But I'm sure I'll get it right, and it might even be quite soon, sometimes I just need the "lightbulb moment" when something just clicks in my head the right way and ta-dah!
I got disatracted in the past few days and focused on something that's been following me from the time not so long after since I've started doing origami and that's folding a mantis shrimp. I've always been obsessed by these animals, and I've always dremt about making one that would be worth making. And right now, after 10 years of dreaming, I suddenly felt I to try it again. I have tried many times in the past but always failed, so I was sceptical this time. I went through a list of failed attempts, but once I got the abdomen right, the battle was half won. The "face" was an area of another great struggle, but then I got a prelimenary idea of what the crease pattern will look like, so I could focus on refining it. I almost never fold anything twice, so I wanted to sure I won't spot any "stupid mistake" on the finished model.

I think the biggest problem with the harpypede is that's such an unusual subject. It's way out of my comfort zone which may be causing the trouble (and which, ironically, made me active in origami again, it was the lit match that ignited it all, so I really hope I can finish it as a tribute .)
It's extremely striking and attractive subject, but it's hard to grasp. I hope I'll make a breakthrough soon, though, it's about time! It's been really troubling me that it's giving me such a hard time. Well it's good to get your feet in touch with earth I guess.

Absolutely beautiful, and in fact, I like that I haven't been able to figure out its anatomy yet even with yopur description. The next Avatar would be BETTER than the first one with you on the team (I actually thought the ecosystem to be fairly conservative).

I'm glad that you are ok with its anonymity, I wanted to leave it a little open, sort of like when you look at a starfish or a jellyfish, you know it works, somehow, but not 100% sure but your ok with it. Thanks that means the WORLD to me, giving myself a little too much credit, i'm sure, but why not dream BIG!
