Had Renly accepted the offer of crown prince, they'd have won. And Renly would still get what he wanted, considering Stannis was far older than him.

Stannis wasn't really old, just thirty-five. But the odds of him having a son was indeed low.

Though, objectively, Renly would hardly make the greatest king. It would be Robert all over again.

Robert minus the strength. At least Robert had the strength to instill fear in others. Renly seemed more like a party animal, kinda like a medieval version of Michaelangelo from TMNT. That's not the kind of guy I want running the country. Especially since during Robert's reign, he did next to nothing while the Lannisters tightened their grip on the kingdom's finances. At the same time, Stannis worked with Jon Arryn to try and reverse the country's decline, to no avail.
