#4 – ESMERALDA, THE SEDUCTRESS
As you near the alley’s entrance, Kim quickly sidesteps into the open and fires rapidly at a nearby building. “Sniper’s suppressed! Move your ass!” she shouts. Despite your previous protestations, you’re eager to comply.
As soon as you’re across, you stop to catch your breath. Kim quickly bumps into you from behind and pushes you forward. “Keep moving,” she says, loading a fresh mag into her gun. The both of you round the first corner just in time to avoid a hail of bullets.
“Who are those guys?” you exclaim as you run.
“Don’t know. Didn’t get a good look. Left up here.”
You turn first, and are greeted by another squad of gray-clad soldiers. You scream, half in excitement and half in utter terror, as you raise your gun, shut your eyes, and repeatedly squeeze the trigger. Seventeen bullets leave your gun’s barrel and seventeen empty shells clatter onto the ground, all while you scream at the top of your lungs. Then, silence.
You slowly open your eyes to see all the soldiers still standing there, seventeen new holes adorning the wall behind them. They seem to be as shocked as you are. The silence lasts a few seconds more before Kim swoops in, grabs your collar, and drags you away. The soldiers snap out of it and clamber after you.
“Great shooting!” Kim yells at you. “I know a few stormtroopers that’d be proud of you.” You’re too terrified to respond.
Before too long, you find your path blocked again by a squad of soldiers. You turn back around and see another squad coming down that way too. Kim pulls you into another alley. Heaving for breath, you think you’re at the end of your rope when you hear a voice: “Over here! Come in here!”
You don’t know where the voice is coming from, but Kim does. She pushes you into an open doorway. She follows suit and shuts the door. Shouting and footsteps approach, then eventually fade away. You let out your breath in relief and collapse to the ground. You shut your eyes for a moment. You open them again to see big, green eyes staring down at you from above.
“Ahh!” you shout. You reflexively roll away and stand up. You can now see who those eyes belong to: a beautiful, dark-skinned woman with a luscious mane of dark hair and hips that put Jennifer Lopez to shame. Your fear disappears.
Your heart starts racing as she approaches you. “Well, hello there,” you say with a smile.
The woman rolls her eyes. She pushes past you and helps Kim up, who had been catching her breath by the doorway. “Good to see you, Esmeralda,” Kim says to her.
“Esmeralda,” you repeat. “Very pretty name.”
“Save it. I’m taken,” Esmeralda shoots at you.
“They always are,” you mutter.
You don't have much time to mope before Kim changes the subject. “Give me a sit-rep, Mera,” Kim orders. “Who are these guys?”
“Based on what I saw on the rooftops, it’s Dreamworks.”
“Of course. Anything to get in Disney’s way.” Kim sits down on a small crate and relaxes for a moment. The sound of a passing helicopter fills the room, then evaporates. She looks over at you. “You better reload your weapon,” she comments.
You comply. Alice showed you how to do this much. As you do so, Kim turns to face Esmeralda. “How many are there?”
“I saw at least five squads, six to ten men each,” Esmeralda responds. “Also saw a whole lot of military helicopters flying around with the Dreamworks logo on it, so you’d better watch out for that.”
“Ugh. We don’t have time for this.” Kim thinks for a moment. “Do you have any way to contact Disney here?”
“Oh, I do!” you pipe in. You take out the sat phone and throw it to Kim. “This goes right to Alice. I’m sure she can get who you want.” You smile to yourself. You were useful!
“Huh. How convenient.” Kim quickly makes the call. “Yeah, Alice? it’s Kim. Get me Commander Langdon.” A bit of silence. Then: “Commander Langdon? This is Viper 1. Yes, Kim. From DIA. Listen, sir, the HVI and I are pinned about six miles northwest of the South Street Seaport by Dreamworks forces. I’m requesting immediate support in this area. No, sir. Yes, many of those, sir. We need faster than fifteen minutes, sir. Thank you sir. Viper 1 out.” She shuts the phone and throws it back at you. “Disney forces will be here soon. Let’s get moving in the meantime.”
“I’ll show you the way,” says Esmeralda.
You follow her and Kim around to the back of the building. As you are about to leave, Esmeralda suddenly ducks and motions for you to do the same. You peek out a window and see a squad of Dreamworks soldiers milling about in the courtyard outside.
“Esmeralda. I think you can take care of this,” Kim says. Esmeralda gives off a devilish grin and nods. To your surprise, she just straightens up and walks straight out the door to the soldiers. You try to stop her, but Kim pulls you back down.
From the shadows, you can see and hear what happens. Esmeralda walks down to the soldiers. “Beautiful night, isn’t it?” she says in a sultry voice. “What are you men doing here, instead of chatting up some pretty girls down in Club Row?”
One of the soldiers raises a gloved hand. “Back off lady. We’re busy.”
“Oh, come on, Sarge!” one of the other soldiers say. “It’s not like she’s armed.”
“That’s where you’re wrong,” Esmeralda murmurs, turning toward the other soldier. She struts up to him, puts an arm around his neck, and leans in. “I’m armed with the strongest weapon of all. The kind that only works on men. Trouble is, I haven’t had a lot of chance to…exercise it, recently.” You can almost see the soldier going red underneath his balaclava. “It’s enough to drive a girl insane.”
Another soldier pushes aside Esmeralda’s current victim and idles up in his place. “Come with me and I’ll promise you plenty of exercise,” he says. Esmeralda cocks her head and smiles at him. The soldier’s knees visibly shake.
The Sergeant, obviously displeased with his men’s lack of discipline, drags the soldier out of Esmeralda’s grasp. “You boys better listen up before I knock some sense back into you with the butt of my rifle. We’re here to find someone, and none of you are getting any ‘exercise’ till we find and eliminate him! Now get back to your post!”
Esmeralda’s spotted her new target. “And you.” She moves onto the Sergeant, who’s frozen in place. “So big. Strong. Authoritative. How bout you take me in for…questioning…and we’ll see where we go from there?”
“I…uh…” The Sergeant struggles for words. “Belay that order, men. We’re taking this woman in for…interrogation.” His men whoop and take Esmeralda away. You stare in a mix of horror and fascination.
“Really?” you ask slowly, mouth agape.
Kim looks over at you. “She’ll be fine. Now shut your mouth and let’s move.” The both of you scramble across the now empty courtyard.
