Description
#7 – SGT. CALHOUN, THE MARINE
"Is she going to be alright?" you ask the medic bent over Kim.
"I've managed to stabilize her," the medic says, finishing a bandage. "But she still has to find a real doctor."
"Aren't you a doctor?"
"I'm a medic. In the wise words of Doc, a doctor cures people. A medic just makes them comfortable...while they die."
"Stop fooling with the boy, Johnson," the female soldier from before orders. She comes up to you and takes off her helmet and balaclava, revealing a stern, angular face and short blonde hair. She shakes your hand and says, "Master Sergeant Calhoun, Disney Marine Corps."
"I'm John," you respond. "Thanks for the rescue, but how did you know to come here? How did you know who to shoot?"
"The good captain here came flying into our base in a flaming airship. Said something about needing to get to Norway, so Colonel Naveen gives her my squad. On the way over here, a ship flying the Disney flag started firing at us. I think that's about when we realized something was up."
"Why are they doing this?" Anna wonders, her unconscious sister in her arms.
"Only Providence knows," Amelia says, "but first things first. We need to land. We didn't have much of a chance to refuel since we were attacked."
"Right. Wakowski! Get this bird on the ground right outside of Arendelle!" Calhoun orders.
"Yes Master Sergeant!" Wakowski responds from the cockpit. You feel the craft shift beneath your feet as it turns.
You sit down on one of the seats next to a tired-looking Jane and rub your chest. It feels like there's something pressing into your heart. Grimacing, you look over at the newest addition to your party. Kristoff wraps an arm around Anna as she lets go of her sister's hand and leaves her to the medic. For once, you don't feel sickened by this expression of affection.
Despite what all video games told you, the V-22 lands safely in a clearing about 2 miles from Arendelle's border. Sergeant Calhoun and her 10 marines disembark with their rifles at the ready. Once they verify that the area is clear, two of the marines carry Kim on a stretcher; another two carry Elsa. Within the hour, you arrive at a small outcropping overlooking the city.
You and Jane join Calhoun and Amelia. Amelia is looking through a spyglass at the city and the bay. "What's going on?" you ask. "Why aren't we moving?"
"I'm afraid we've run into a spot of trouble," Amelia says, handing you the spyglass. You look through it, and immediately see an enormous ship sitting at anchor in the bay. Its decks are bristling with guns and cannons. Its length had to be at least a third of a kilometer. It was guarded by two smaller ships that patrolled up and down the bay.
"I know that ship," Calhoun grunts as you pass the spyglass to Jane. "DCS Roy Oliver. Pride of the Disney fleet. I have a good feeling it ain't exactly friendly."
"That's going to be a problem if we're taking my ship," Jane comments, giving the spyglass back to Calhoun. "And I suspect that's the only way we're getting out of here, supposing we don't run back to England."
"Well, we still need to get inside the city, look for a doctor," you say. "We can think up a plan as soon as we get Kim and Elsa some treatment."
"Agreed," Amelia states. "Master Sergeant, if you would please split your men into fire teams, we can sneak into the city in a more stealthy manner."
"Yes, sir." Calhoun disappears into the brush.
The captain, the 11 marines, Kristoff, Anna, and you are split into three teams. Calhoun, three marines, Kristoff, and you comprise the first fire team. Amelia, three marines with Elsa, and Anna compose the second fire team, while Jane and the remaining four marines with Kim compose the third. By the time you sneak into the city, the sun is high in the sky.
You and your team sneak into the city with little trouble. Langdon's forces patrol the streets, but you manage to evade most of them; the ones that see you are immediately taken out by the marines. Thankful for your escort, Kristoff takes you all to his house, the agreed upon rendezvous point.
You only wait about ten minutes before fire team three arrives at the door. The marines lay Kim's unconscious body on the ground and take watch over the windows. Jane sits down by a wall post. A long time passes. No sign of fire team two.
You stare at the cracks in the walls as the minutes pass by. Eventually, you look over at Kristoff. He looks visibly distressed, and keeps pacing from a crate by the sink to the nearest ground-floor window. Eventually, you walk up to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down, man," you say. "You're giving Ramirez a hard time."
Private First Class Ramirez, in charge of guarding the ground floor windows, nods at you in appreciation. You take Kristoff to the crate and sit him down.
"You really do love her, don't you?" you ask cordially. It just comes out of you.
"Oh, Anna." He lets out a nervous chuckle. "You know, I think I remember you at Club Disney a few weeks ago. I think you were hitting on my girlfriend?"
"Yeah, well...she's a very attractive woman."
"Yeah, I know." Kristoff falls silent for a moment. "I thought I was fine alone. I had my friends, my family...but after she came into my life...I don't know how to explain it. I don't feel right being by myself anymore."
You have no idea how that feels, but you nod anyway, as though in understanding. "Don't worry about it. From what I've seen, she's more than capable."
Kristoff laughs nervously. "I know that better than anyone else...hell, she saved my life a few times. But..."
He's interrupted by a loud rap at the door. The marines on your floor immediately raise their rifles to the door, Calhoun included. The sergeant barks out, "Slipper!"
After a brief pause, someone behind the door answers: "Glass! Open up, we've got wounded!" The marines lower their rifles as Calhoun approaches the door and opens it.
Fire team two comes pouring in. The first two marines put Elsa on the ground, while Amelia and Anna bring in a wounded marine. They lay the man on the ground next to Elsa. The medic immediately comes to the man's aid.
Calhoun immediately turns to you and grabs you by your shoulder. "Take off your coat and scarf," she says. "Get out there, find a doctor, now." You nod and comply.
The outside air is chilly, but not unbearable. In just your t-shirt and jeans, you walk at a brisk pace through the city, trying not to attract attention. You look for someone to ask for directions, but all the citizens appear to have retreated to their homes. You only see the occasional Disney patrol, striding around in 3-man groups, rifles raised and eyes alert. It's only a matter of time before you're accosted by one of them.
"What's your business here?" one of them asks.
"I'm, uh, going to my grandma's house. She needs her medication," you respond timidly.
"Let me see your identification," another of them orders, pointing his carbine in your direction.
"I, um..." You raise your hands and grin nervously. "I'm so sorry, officer, I think I left my ID in my other pants..."
"Hands up!" one of them roars. Startled, you immediately comply. You don't have your gun or your backup...you're screwed. You're totally screwed.
"Wait!" shouts a nearby voice. You unconsciously turn to look where it's coming from and are greeted by a rifle butt to your face. You fall to the ground, but a man comes to your side and helps you back up.
"How dare you!" the man shouts. "This man is under my care!"
"Step away from the suspect, civilian," one of the soldiers threaten.
"He's not a suspect, he's a paranoid autistic schizophrenic with an expressive language disorder!" the man yells. "And he's my patient."
"I don't--" one of the soldiers starts.
"He ALSO happens to be the son of Commander Langdon. If you want to take it up with him why you shot his only son, be my guest. Otherwise, get out of my way."
"I--"
"That's what I thought." The man drags you to your feet and pulls you away. "It's alright, Bobby, I got you," he audibly mutters, leaving the confused soldiers behind you.
You finally look up at the man and see a tall, sharp-jawed black man in a white doctor's coat. He flashes a wide grin at you. "I'm Doctor Joshua Sweet," he says. "I think we both have a mutual enemy."
Internally, you're in disbelief. This is so stupidly lucky, you feel like you're in a poorly written novel. Outwardly, you nod, and as soon as the soldiers are out of sight, you stand up straight. "I need you," you say. "Follow me."
