Hiyo! I finally got myself on DA. Sorry we didn't get a picture together this year! Me and a bunch of friends of mine are going to try to get a suite closer to the convention so I can wear the costume all four days next year. Anyhow, a guy at work wants to build a Blood Angels suit and another one's considering Black Templar if he has the time to work with the first one on it, so there's a good chance there'll be more of us this year. Hehe I actually ran into you guys when I was walking to the family guy panel, but didn't have time to stop because we had to get on line. I was wearing a T-shirt wrapped around my head like a ninja mask though, not the armor.
Actually that's exactly why I didn't wear the armor saturday, we were running back and fourth between panels all day.

yeah definitely! thursday seemed pretty good this year since the panels were ok but not great, and sunday was the best since the panels are mostly for kids. not sure what to do about friday and saturday since me and the group of people i went with spent the whole day running back and forth between panels and other stuff.
yeah, getting stopped for pictures was kind of a pain too. eventually we decided to just keep walking, and since i move really slowly i just told people to set up their cameras, go a few feet ahead of me, and i'll stop when they had a shot lined up or i'd just walk slower or something. but, we got a year to think it through, so we'll come up with something

I like the idea of a full-costume group on Thursday and Sunday, though those of us in more simple costumes could wear them Friday/Saturday as well. One thing you could do is make a secondary, easy to wear 40K costume for days when you want to do panels, like a tech priest or a redemptionist.
There's still the picture problem, of course. I find doubling expected travel times works well...

Haha yeah there's no avoiding the picture thing, and it's only going to be worse in a group. I think we'll be good with just doing Thursday and Sunday. Might swing Friday too depending on what the panels are. Friday and Saturday I think we're better off if everyone just does their own thing I guess. I'll know more in a month or two when I figure out how many people I'll be going with.

haha yeah that was pretty sweet, where'd you find a hat like that?
mine's pretty much done, but i want to build a stand for it and when that's finished i'll probably make a helmet.
one of the guys at work is building a vacuu-form table, so i'm going to help him build that and the molds for the armor. i'm not sure he'll actually get anywhere on the table though, so no commitments until he finishes that first.

mmm i heard alot of one comment from people at the con, that i thought when i saw shots of the costume myself,
"shame about the feet"
is there anything you can do to round the legs at all?
i got my hat from a Russian military surplus store, and this year, a friend made a hat cover for it, because that was way above my skills with cloth.
i'm much better with armor and props.

Haha I was just happy the feet and legs stayed attached. I might put a little bit of work into touching them up, at least making the paper mache on the toes look a little less bumpy. But I'm almost as content to leave it as it is. I'll see how much time I have come January when this project at work is done. I'm in the office like eleven or twelve hours a day, six days a week and have been since March. So, when May and June came around and I hadn't even started the legs yet, I figured I'd just throw together something that worked and was debating not even doing the stilts. A friend of mine at work wants to build a vacuu-form table and after seeing the armor I did wants to build his own suit, so there's a good chance I'll work on it with him and come next year in an all-plastic model.
That makes sense about the hat since I'm pretty sure Imperial Guard Commissars are a direct copy of the Soviet WW2 and 1950-60s Commissars, even down to the name. Pretty sweet though!

Just wonderful! Makes me jealous. I only saw 3 40k cosplayers at Anime Boston this year...
I'd do it, but Tau and Tyrannids aren't that easy XD

who said you need to be a commissar to do that? wear a good friar robe and make a chainsword, chain a big book to your back and you can be a confessor/preacher/missionary.
even more reason to scream "heretics!"

Flippin' sweet. Hopefully I'll have a better lasgun then; does ComicCon allow airsoft guns?
I think I may convert a G3 into a Lasgun-esque weapon.

I think it allows airsoft guns as long as they aren't loaded with gas or pellets, but you'd have to check the website.

Ah.
AX's weapons rules were quite gay; they had to be colored a vibrant color, and had to be "Peace-Bonded" (basically, they wrap part of it in a neon yellow strap).
It didn't frig up my Lasgun too bad, but still, lame.

Comic-Con makes you wrap small, low-key pieces of purple tape around some part of the weapon, and they usually do it somewhere that isn't readily visible. They actually respect cosplayers and congoers enough to not assume they will all be total idiots.

Makes sense.
From what I understand, it wasn't so much AX's fault, as the LAPD being dicks about it.

oh no, i blame AX for using newb dumb ass volunteers to staff the weapon inspection booth.
i had some kid who looked no older than 16 look over both of the props i made for 2008, compliment me, and then give me a S*** eating grin and tell me that i cant take them into the con, after approving someone with a spring based airsoft pistol with a red cap on the barrel right before me ... my bolt pistol had a barrel the size of a coke can! .. i was not best amused.. so i proceeded to borrow a cable tie from a passing ninja's kunai, and steered clear from the weapon check booth from then on..
i doubt i'm going back to AX.

Now that's bullshit; when I learned of AX's retarded weapons rules this year, I was perplexed as to how you got that Boltgun in there...
I was anxious to see you there, though. I was the only 40k cosplayer there :/ (well, aside from another DKoK trooper, but he didn't have any Imperial iconography on him, so he could've been a generic WWI infantry as far as anyone else could tell).
I think I may attempt to make a Flamer for CC '09, though. My current home-made Lasgun just doesn't quite cut it!

san diego comic con and gencon in indianapolis are much better places for gamers like us to show off our costumes.. AX is just getting worse and worse since they moved their location.

FOR THE EMPEROR!
(and would someone tell the commisars that their guns are probably more effective than those flashlights and should be aimed in the general direction of the enemy?)
(But beats my crappy commissar outfit from halloween.)

The commissars can kill people with their awesomeness, not guns required. Seriously though, I think their arms were getting tired or something. XD
