Description They call me “Man Mountain McGuirk”
among other names
and I laugh and roll my eyes
and talk of other things

But then, at other times
I think of what they say to me
and I wonder
if maybe I am less of a man
and more of a mountain

The peak of my head,
although rarely covered in snow,
is visible from miles away
and blocks the sun for many
passers-by

My face is jagged and sharp,
with craggy walls and cliffs
perfect for climbing
should such a tiny man exist

My body is filled with rolling hills
here a muscle
there some fat
slowly and gently leading their way

To my feet,
whose soft, slight hills
have foothills of their own
in my toes

And so I realize
that I wasn’t a man
with the poor luck
of being of a mountain’s stature

But rather,
I am a mountain
with the pure luck
of being shaped like a man

Thank you! My family is rather proud of this one, too. I like most of it, but sometimes it bothers me. Maybe because my family HAS started referring to me as Man Mountain McGuirk after reading this poem. Ha!

Maybe I should actually get around to posting up the original version sometime.

i love those last two stanzas, a refreshingly positive way to deal with peoples negative and discriminating attitudes
