Description Is it my
Imagination
or do the men
in those
black&white
films have a sort
of quiet dignity
a knowing courage
that enables them
to exist
without speaking
(although their
mouths
may try to
betray them)
when the end
of their existence
is just a few
still photographs
away

Exactly! You don't get expression in films the way you used to, all you have to do is look at Rebecca (I know that wasn't a silent movie but oh well) and Laurence Olivier's face when he's standing on top of that cliff. I love this, so much *bops*

theres a lovely sentiment captured within this piece, but it is almost sad in some ways. i think that in todays world of high action films the quiet dignity has all to often been lossed

Thank you! Yes, it's supposed to be sad. I agree about today's action films. This was actually written after viewing a couple old family videos with no sound and just some long-dead family members traipsing around on screen, building a house, playing with a dog in the snow, riding horses, and posing for the camera. It was just really interesting, especially since part of the film featured a ~20 year old version of my ~80 year old grandfather.

That's cool - a whole poem that's essentially just one question. Again, great imagery - and some interesting metaphors can be inferred in here.

What about the women?

Funny you should ask! I was originally going to write it about the women, but then thought that I didn't want to imply that women being silent conferred dignity on them... I don't remember my exact thought process, but somehow I thought I'd come off sounding sexist. Ha!
