Description Poets do not infuse words with power
do not grant them meaning
the words themselves are significance
are vitality and courage

What joy to read a poem by
a long (or not-so-long) dead titan of
warmth, chill, sunshine, void
and find where the words lead you

For no poem has meaning beyond where you stop
and all interpretations bear some weight
(some an ounce while others ninety years)
despite what the poet may have intended

So I applaud you who read this poem
and claim that this poem is about
the death of my wonderful grandfather
(who is still very much alive)

Wow, good point. I call this kind of thing meta-poetry, or poetry about poetry. I love it, great job, and

I'm not sure how to explain it, but this poem "clicked" for me. That doesn't happen much. You got the level of words to the point where reading them didn't distract you from the poem itself, if that makes any sense to you. Good on yer!

It does make sense, and I'm flattered, thank you!

A poem on poetry! How clever. Very true. Like the 2nd stanza states, I find that poetry written by older people, or my aunt for this matter -- she's not a clarified writer but she can write a damn good poem. Nice work.

Again, I love the subject matter, though I cringe at the lack of punctuation [I'm an allergic poet to non-punctuated pieces] HOWEVER, it does not fully take away from the poem. It speaks very clearly about how poetry can be overrated and read too much into by the audience, who simply want to sound "artistic"...its quite annoying...but; I also understand this poem as mildy ironic towards the idea that a artist's work is only appreciated after his/her death...uggh I'm a Literature freak so I'll stop boring you with my incredibly long critique ....

Yeah, it took me a long time before I could read or write poetry without punctuation, but I think a number of my pieces come off stronger for it. Then again, it could be only me.

I'm a Literature freak, too, so any time you want to go off the deep end and seriously critique my work, by all means, do. I like a good disassembling, especially ones that aren't always nice. Again, thanks for the kind words.

wow.. just wow.. the poem gave me chills when I read it. I agree with In-Spira, what makes a poem truly great isnt just that the poem itself is well written or well portrayed, but that it reaches the people who read it. from me :3

In-Spira [2006-06-06 19:42:30 +0000 UTC]

Words are more than just words. It's wonderful that poetry can give different meanings and messages to different people. It really doesn't matter how you interpret it, just as long it is something that matters to the reader - what makes the poem come alive. I very much do agree, and like the poem.

yeah people do have a tendancy to over interpret but then sometimes that is the beauty of poety we all can take something from it!

Thank you! I wrote it yesterday, half in my head on the way home and the rest in my apartment. I was fantastically worried once I wrote it, though, that it mostly would come off as banal.
