Description
I don't know what the piece has to do with ribs whatsoever, nor do I know what the First Rib was.Viva random mechas! I was supposed to make a 20000 pageviews piece before the previous piece, but I procrastinated, and thus decided to make this one the one instead; despite it being 4k clicks too late.
There's a lot of history involved behind this one. History, as in I started it over half a year ago now. I decided to pick it back up a week ago, and after lots of turmoil and experimentation and temporary eye blindness due to the overwhelming whiteness, it's finally done. It'll be some time before I do something to do with mechanisms again, that's for sure.

Tool used was Photoshop CS2.

I love that your pieces always look so powerful. I think it's the combination of big machines plus a sense of movement, probably plus the contrast with small, fragile-looking girls.

Ironically, I just watched Transfomers 2 today, and let's say it had me in the chair going O____O in a good way.

The film only came here to SA yesterday. Though I warn you the thing's really the popcorn flick; don't expect too much plot or drama. XD
And I'll have you know that I experimented with a dark grey base - it REALLY looked evil then.

Pic makes for a great wallpaper. Though IMHO, I think the chaingun is a bit too clean, even considering it's a vector.
But the girl is still awesome. FTW!

I did think about it being too clean myself too, but I had such a clean streak going on everywhere that it would have been a shame to dirtify it.
And yeah, college really just butchers my time now, so I can only churn one or two pieces every vacation or so.

Absolutely instawin! I really could have done a bit more about that weapon though. There were so many debates over what on earth it should be. In the end I forced myself to put holes into the barrel and call it a minigun. O___oU

Great to see some of your new work again. The face and hair is done absolutely stunning. Love the way the hair flows. Shading on the character was also very nicely done.
Just a question on you technique, is your 1st draft scanned in or do you draw everything on computer, and do you use the pen and lasso tools allot to get those clean lines?

I had originally intended for the piece to not have any outlines whatsoever, so the shading was more overdone than usual. XD
As for the technique, I usually draw my idea first on paper (VERY sketchy), and if the scanner does work, I would scan it in and simply refine the lines slowly... very slowly, with the pen tool. If the scanner does not work, I tend to have to reproduce the paper sketch as a generalized digital sketch before going over it.
Pretty much everything in this piece in particular was done using the pen tool only. I know the magnetic lasso tool is probably much faster for some areas, but it's a habit of mine now to use the pen tool.

I know what you mean by the pen tool taking a long time
I used to use my scanner allot to, but when I got my tablet, I made the slow but gradual transition to doing everything directly in Photoshop.

I am sometimes so tempted to just Stroke everything instead of making whole shapes for each line, haha, but ah, the long way is much more worth it indeed.

I think "Third Rib" probably is the epitome of the ribs. Though I really don't intend to do any more ribs... whatever they're meant to be, haha.
