True to my word, I'm making my way over from LJ to stalk the amazing artists from the BBTB fest. As my first find, this definitely does not disappoint.
While film!Snape is all very impressive, book!Snape is the one I fell in love with, and I just adore it when an artist can see him clearly enough to reproduce him like this. There's no attempt to make him pretty, but he's somehow beautiful all the same. I love his expression here - and his hooked nose, greasy stringy hair and narrow shoulders. I love the idea of trying to capture his moral strength without shying away from any of his less than laudable qualities.
I can see dA is going to be lots of fun.

Welcome!!!
If you are a new deviant (congrats!!!), let me help if I can : on dA you can see the deviants' galleries, on three pages: "featured", "browse" and "scrapbook" (mine is by half empty after some massive storage). In the "favourites" you can see the personal collections of the favorite works, done by others. It's very useful, if you share similar tastes with someone. I wish you a rich journey through the galleries. And if you are interested in this kind of Snape, visit our group : #Spinners--End (it's the same group I linked too on Lj).
For me Snape is more beautiful and more interesting with his flaws, physical and moral - it gives him his true heroism, his real courage, that he had to struggle in life and that despite all his flaws he did try to fight against his own bad instincts. I feel sorry when people wants him to be already handsome and virtuous : it makes him more ordinary and less worthy. But IMO as every fangirl, I do tend to make him too attractive, sometimes.
I'm glad you like this particular one. Thank you.

I love your representation of Snape. You've created a lot of very good Snape portraits, but this one is my favourite. I don't know why.
Maybe it's because you have managed to point the presence of Dumbledore without drawing him. I suppose that Snape can have such face expression just when he faces the only man with whom he can be sincere.
(I'm sorry for my English).

Wow....I fucking adore this piece.
You've managed to capture a quintessential expression on his face that just makes me melt. That arched eyebrow, slight parted mouth, as if he's about to say something scathing or with disdain, the slightly leaning posture, the hair. Oh gods, the hair: it makes him look all sweaty and exerted, like he's been doing......things.
Great piece. Love it. You've been getting better and better.

He looks amazing. I love/hate the scenes in the chapter though. I like it because it's very revealing of Snape's character and the changes in his character too. BUT it's also revealing for Dumbledore and I hate him every time I read this for not giving a crap about Snape. Severus made very wrong choices in his youth but he knew it and he tried to make up for those horrible things yet this whole time Dumbledore who Snape was working for and was supposed to trust--Dubmledore obviously didn't think Snape's soul was redeemable. As a spy Snape was extremely important to Dumbledore but as a person, Snape seemed to have no good worth which was just horrible and not true at all. Ugh. *Hexes Dumbledore* The moment Snape had asked him 'and what of my soul, Dumbledore?' it seemed like...maybe Snape had been hopeful that he could be redeemed, but Dumbledore just crushed that, as if no amount of trying would ever be enough.
Anyway this beautiful and very emotional. I really love it. Everything about this Snape looks so good. Especially like his hair, it's hard for me to get the 'greasy' look right when I draw him.

I read it a different way. Draco is just a teenager and it would quite well destroy him to commit murder, whereas Snape is mature enough to be able to see the whole picture and realise that the act he is committing is actually in Dumbledore's best interests (he dies with more respect than he would do with the Callows and he's going to die anyway from the horcrux curse) as well as the interests of "their side" (because Snape gets to remain a spy). But Draco is too young and not strong enough to be able to realise that and Dumbledore doesn't want him to commit such an appalling and irreversible act at such a young age.

Personally, I didn't read it entirely that way...Dumbledore did use him but there is more hope beneath the surface... In Albus's idea, Snape is not committing murder when Draco would do basically kill, not being ask to, not knowing that Albus would die from his poisoned hand/the poison from the cave. His request remains morally disputable, though. And Snape's reaction is genuine, pure. Rowling shows well that part in the chapter, in my opinion - the ambiguous moral and priorities of Albus Vs the moral changes in Snape...
Albus doesn't show the same affection for Snape than he does to Harry, for instance. However, there are some nuances in a few words about/to Snape, notably his tankful words and the shifting nature of their relationship, as it is described in the Prince's tale (from "you disgust me " to the reactions from Snape towards Albus in the end)...There is something of a cold, flawed father/tough, prodigal son complicated relationship there, with a strong dependency/complementarity between the two, and a long trend of showing how the younger will morally mature and win...+ Showing how Slytherin can also display more value than Gryffindor in the end, too.
I like the hair you do for Snape and in general how you draw him as he is described in the books (i.e. not like Handsome Prince with Byronic postures and white 19th century fluffy shirt or some old fat auntie with fluffy hair). Snape is very challenging to draw, in my opinion. About 95% of my attempts have been failures, especially with the hair... The damn greasy hair is *hard* to draw, really!!!

thank you, I agree with you and I can't read the "DD ONLY used Snape" comments anymore, because I think they are too unilaterally. He might have used him (as well as he used harry!) Bun in my opion their relationship where quite more complicated, not white, not black, grey. How you discribe their relationship as complicated father/son relationship is exactly what I think. Albus isn's as nice to him as to harry. But harry is an innocent boy - Snape was Death Eater and is still a difficult man. Dumbledore threats him very harsh sometimes, but in the end it was DD bringing him on the way to morally restoration.
I don't think that DD had snape told to demage his soul in that scene - because he doesn't ask for murder (he wants to be killed). For draco instead it would have been murder! When DD looks at snape like his soul was visible for him I understood it more like a question of abilities ("Severus, I ask you, because I know you have a dark history and you are able to do the avada kedavra"). we all know that the AK isn't that simple, draco himself can't do it and at the end of the halfbloodprince Snape shouts at harry, that harry hasn't the power for an inexcusably curse. For me these are strong hints what DD may have "told" Snape with his gace.
