Description I've been working on a paper all day, and I had an overwhelming urge to do something artistic to get my mind off it for a little while. I started doodling in Blender and Photoshop, and here's the result of about an hour and a half's work.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that. Do you have a link?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MikeZ83 In reply to vmulligan [2011-09-18 07:59:18 +0000 UTC]

It's basically a series of science fiction novels which try to merge sci-fi themes with British naval history of the past centuries.

I like that - its like Stone but you can tell its a ship!

The misty clouds cover it with mystery so well!

Fantastic!

Wow! What an amazing image. I really love the cloud rendering; it really makes the image.

vmulligan In reply to GlenRoberson [2011-07-23 03:15:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The clouds were actually painted in Photoshop. I like adding some smoke or mist to an image to tone down the crisp "computer-generated" look. Even in a space scene, I find it helps, despite not being totally scientifically accurate.

An ancient ship, ghostly and silent, drifting through a distant nebula or orbiting within the upper reaches of a gas giant. There is no telling how many decades, centuries or millenia it has been slowly moving through the icy vastness.
Nice work.

Oh, of course--the ship had an expiration date on it. I forgot to look.
Intriguing work, please do more.

I'd like to see somebody take Chris Foss' ships and re-do them in CGI. It would be most interesting...

SpaceCowboy5000 In reply to flamingmarsupial [2011-07-15 19:54:04 +0000 UTC]

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Chris Foss always painted huge ships. I think cgi would allow for perspectives to give that sense of hugeness.

vmulligan In reply to SpaceCowboy5000 [2011-07-08 05:15:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I just looked up Chris Foss. Did his work appear in the Terran Trade Authority books? It seems to have that style. In any case, those books are one of my major inspirations.

Nice - and very nice for only 1,5 hours! Did you put a texture on the model or is that painted in Photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

vmulligan In reply to KerroPerro [2011-02-21 06:19:32 +0000 UTC]

The textures were procedural, done with Blender's built-in procedural functions. Only the volumetric effects were added in Photoshop.
