Oh dear ahaha Charcoal is SUPER fun to work with, and you will get your hands DIRTY ^^ 
This drawing you happened to message on is when I first started playing with it, and in this particular picture I just used it like it were a pencil and smudged where I thought I do some shading, and by golly was it a rotten way to do things ahaha

you really want to focus on the negatives when using charcoal, you aren't drawing an outline, you are filling in and making blanks that are that picture. Another trick I learned, is to very lightly cover the entire layout with smudged charcoal. What I do is put the charcoal on my hands and wipe the paper down. I also use a kneaded eraser (those grey erasers that are moldable) and a white eraser to use for really small details. I wish I had some of my other charcoal stuff on here, but the canvas I use is too large to scan. 

Mess around with it! And have fun!! (also if you have charcoal pencils, don't sharpen them with a pencil sharpener, use a razor blade or else you lose charcoal super fast! I use compressed charcoal sticks, no sharpening needed ^^)
