makes sense. i guess the elements that point to medicine are the same that made me think it was torture...a secret room (either to insure medical privacy or to hide criminal actions), a direct tap into both the brain and spinal cord (either malicious control of or aid to two of the main body systems of sensory experience), and her curling into the fetal position (either a response to anguish, un-ease, or just the way she's being suspended). i'm glad i asked about your thoughts...i had justified something quite opposite to your intents...
