I'm pretty sure this was tried in real life by Japan, but the aircraft storage was very limited and the submarine had to surface before launching. Does this have some kind of mechanism or specially designed aircraft to take off from underwater? Or will it have to surface just like its WWII counterpart?Β

The U.S. Navy and theΒ British NavyΒ experimented with aircraft with no landing gear and flexible deck aircraft carriers. One of the designs became the Supermarine Scimitar fighter!

I count six torpedo tubes, thirty-two VLS missile tubes, and three aircraft elevators

i guess one problem is a very wet deck for planes landing?

maybe it has pumps to drain water away?

Yeah, that was cited as one big problem of the design, out of many. Only solution I can find is using STOVL aircraft.

Also, lol, are you from MIRAGE?

Nice idea if the rear stabilizer wasnt in the way but nice first concept of a submerciable aircraft carrier how long would you say that submercible carrier would be in real life?

It would be better if you make it carry unmaned cobat aircraft in place of normal maned aircraft.

The Japanese made 4 ships of a similar concept during WWII.

They only carried 4 planes each and were scrapped at the end of the war after the Allies got them, so the Russians wouldn't get them.

Yeah, the I-400, albeit those didn't have a runway. Still, pretty incredible machines for their time, too bad they didn't do anything.

Should probably move the rudder under the hull. As it is, it's in the line of flight. I assume that's why you put the conning tower to the side?

OR.
Make the Conn and the rudder also on elevators, retracting into the hull during flight operations.

I'd spread the VLS tubes a bit farther apart. Right now, too much capability could be taken out by one crash.

And submarine round hulls are notorious for rocking in the slightest seas. Makes them poor platforms for landing a plane, even VTOL. Could make the hull deeper and V shaped, or could have outriggers for stability.

VoughtVindicator In reply to KeithVII [2010-05-29 23:28:46 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like a good idea, I had actually not noticed the rudder getting in the way of the runway until now. It would probably do well to put it on the underside, even if it loses the ability to rest on the seafloor as a result.

As for the VLSs... well, a crash would fuck up the submarine so much that losing missile tubes would be the least of its problems.

But yeah, thanks for a clever comment

This is amazing. The Russian navy could build it by converting one of them Typhoons into carrying modified MIG's ...

I think the Typhoon would be too small to fit a runway for anything that isn't VTOL; but it would still be cool to see (if unpractical)

make a BIGGER typhoon chassis?

make it so it opens up in the middle (airtight of course when diving) to be the runway and launch jets. ^^

Indeed. The Russians have always had the biggest things - Siberian Tigers, Most hottest women, longest railways, The Spetsnaz along with the largest cannon , bell and Bomb. Also they have the deepest lake as well.

Nice! Would be a great idea for landing aircraft like refuleing. But put a plane under water and Im sure it wont fly for a while D=

Like I said maby it could re-surface for emergancy landings, refuling, re.. armingof missles XD

Still very awesome!

The planes are supposed to land and be stored inside the thing. The three square-shaped things next to the runway are the aircraft elevators
