Having had a cultured upbringing, Hoshika is the very image of a lady: she’s well-mannered, insightful, has a tender hand, and moves with a delicate grace. She is patient and slow to anger, acting only with purpose instead of rushing into things. This is true even for the way she speaks as she hates to waste words, though some might feel she’s being cold. She won’t hesitate to say what needs to be said and even less so to cut someone down—if need be. Behind that impassive façade lies a well-meaning heart. She can be quite sisterly when it comes down to it.
Despite how devoutly she’ll take care of others and lend an ear, Hoshika rarely cares to talk about herself. In this way, she keeps people at a distance and hides away her thoughts and feelings. She is afraid of being truly vulnerable with someone and would rather bury herself in her work than stop to think about her emotional needs. She carries a few thorns in her heart and is disenfranchised about the idea of kingdom pride and loyalties…but despite that, she’s hopeful.
She’s a dreamer at her core. She wants to believe in people, in silly fluffy romance, in love, in adventure, in ideals…Desperately so, but she’s terrified to reach out. She wants to have purpose in life and Hoshika hopes that her work as a priestess will help her find peace.
Backstory: The Akitsu-kichi family has a longstanding history in the mining and refinement industry. Though the family originally hailed from the Autumn Kingdom, they moved to the Summer Kingdom in mercantile pursuits of the unique ore and gems found there. They settled in Warana Mura where precocious Hoshika would eventually be born. Bearing the name ‘Akitsu-kichi’, she was expected to become familiar with the family business and the life that came with it: Fine clothes, fine breeding, experienced tutors, books upon lessons…She should have wanted for naught. But although well provided for given her family’s affluence, it did not protect her from those that thought ill of her family’s origins. In her youth, young Hoshika was prey to contemptuous whisperings behind her back, misguided ‘pranks’ from children who fed off their parents’ bitterness, and through it all Hoshika was expected to simply ‘wave it off’ because of her parents’ own ego; She was not to complain but to ‘look above them’, and this apathetic attitude did not sit well with her. How could a child be blamed for the sins of a kingdom she had never known? How could her parents spare no time for her tears, caring only for the future they had planned for her?
So, Hoshika learned to not cry and continued her studies…but she didn’t forget the enmity of adults.
Childhood was made bearable by a Sandile in her self-defense courses, who became one of her few friends. Their brash confidence was a fine match for the sharp-tongued Trapinch, and the two often got into trouble together—much to her chagrin. But at least with them, Hoshika felt like she could somewhat be herself.
As the two grew older and matured those more carefree days didn’t last. As a Vibrava, Hoshika had become a cultured and poised lady, well-versed in literature, business, and the art of fan dancing. Her friend, now a Krokorok, was set to soon take over their family’s business and had become a young adult with some hardened ideologies: ’The strong do not even notice the weak’. They insisted, however, that they were the same as always. Their family were notable merchants in their own right and she watched her friend’s focus turned from adventure to power beneath their influence. They once spoke of ‘changing the way things were’, but now she worried as to how they’d want to change them.
Because of their being childhood friends, their parents began to push for a merging of their families and become some mercantile power through their union…despite Hoshika’s protests. It all came to a head one night, when she happened upon a late-night meeting between their families. To her horror, she discovered that their parents were delving into shady under-the-table dealings, illegal trades, lying about supply to inflate prices…and her friend not only knew this, they were part of it! She confronted the families, imploring them not to go down this path but they would not listen. A battle ensued thereafter…
Renouncing her family, Hoshika fled Warana Mura that night. Refusing to look back, she ran and ran until she couldn’t anymore. She found herself at the steps of the Autumn Temple, weary and apathetic after her weeks on the road. After being allowed shelter and rest Hoshika decided to stay at the temple and trained hard to become a miko. Nearly 5 years have passed since then…
