Yes, this map is really really bigger on its original format. I did it as a real map, something like 1m50 x 2 m, I don't remember the exact size.

Can I use this?

Or rather, can I use a tiny portion of this image?

I'm a cheap ol' fanfiction writer and I really like this image. I was wondering if I could cut a portion out to use it as a backdrop to another piece of artwork. With your permission, of course.

You can find nice old maps on the web. As I did to find references for this artwork. Use google images. Because this deviation is a map of my professional work universe and I don't give permission to use it.

I think I might get lost in this if I stared at it for too long. It's so beautiful and incredibly detailed, and it really has that fantasy feel to it! I was wondering though, the navigation lines - or are they called rhumb lines? - in the map, how did you make them? I'm not really asking for specifics, but is there a specific formula of calculation or did you just do it by eye? Thanks!

Oh, and I do apologize for the silly question

I find this lines web on a real map of the 18°century. There must have a specific calculation on it but I don't know which one

Ah I see! Thanks for telling me! I've been looking at maps for a few days now, trying to draw one of my own... Haven't dared to try it yet... Thanks for your help! And it sounds like you have a wonderful story with a wonderful map! Too bad I can't read French

Superbe carte !

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to Margot-L [2012-05-20 22:17:42 +0000 UTC]

Do you think we could get a work-process on how you made this? I'm very interested in about exactly HOW this was made. Thanks!

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to AlexAvander [2011-12-17 22:30:45 +0000 UTC]

It will be difficult to do. I didn't keep any step of its made. But I can say I used as reference real sea chart of the XVIII° century I found on the web, to do the plot and the outline of the continents.
The background is a old paper scanned, with some brush strokes done with photoshop.

Hey There I really like your artwork 10/10! I would just like to mention quickly that I have a gaming team set up of 9. We need more 3d and 2d artists for both conceptual and final artworks. We are a serious team looking for all gaming roles including GUI artists and others. The game is based over 4000 years ago and contains Vikings, Barbarians, Shaolin Monks and the Atlantians. Post a reply or send a note to me or email me on vxtream@gmail.com.

Thanks to all members who read this and please consider it as we do have many professionals involved.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to Nath-T [2010-12-09 00:31:13 +0000 UTC]

how did you make this ?
any special kind of brushes ?
i ask besause i would like to create a world mapof my own but i dont have the right tools :S

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to Nerezzart [2010-08-16 11:02:51 +0000 UTC]

this is a mix of technics. I used a real maritim card I found on the web as model, for the texture of the ink, de forms of mountains or coasts. I play with the texture of old paper, draw and color some decorations, etc.
If you want to make one, search some old maritim cards of XVII or XVIII century ^^

Please can you do a tutorial of how you did this!

Sorry my bad english, i am from peru and i am still learning

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to DharienNigthroad [2009-12-04 02:29:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, I really don't have time to make a tutorial... but I think you can do a good map with a little of photomanipulation with maps on the web. I found myself ones which where really good.
I used this one: [link] ( you juste have to choise a subcategory on "countries" )

DharienNigthroad In reply to Vyrhelle-VyrL [2009-12-04 03:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Awh this is beautiful, your work makes me want to start a comic of my own,

Heh did you reference Scandinavia for Varenka?
i dunno about anyone else but the first think i thought of was Norway Sweden and Finland!
Very well manipulated if thats so, X3

I love how realistic to a real old map it is <3

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to AshKerins [2009-10-16 22:01:05 +0000 UTC]

The shapes of the continents are from a old and simple sketch of a friend of mine. I don't know her inspiration ^^

And this is the 3rd map I did of them... I found each time a better way to represent them.

Vyrhelle-VyrL In reply to vicky77120 [2009-06-12 11:02:34 +0000 UTC]
